Gonna need a new job

So anyone that knows me has heard me complain about my job, well the shit has litterally hit the fan. For a while we've all had people in the offices to give us a heads up when something stupid was about to happen. "Cash your check fast, we're short on payroll." or "Be ready, they didn't pay the electric bill/cable bill/water bill" whatver.

We never lost water or power (surprisingly) but the cable and internet were always an issue. A hotel full of people that all want to check their email at the same time can be an ugly thing. Most of our housekeeping was functionally retarded at best, and after a few office layoffs, they were the next in line for the hatchet. I think we have like three housekeepers left.

The restaurant had most of the kitchen equipment repossessed because they stopped paying the supply company the leased it from. Same thing with the guest coffee station, the repossessed the coffee maker. We have to use a regular 12 cup coffee pot and most of the people here can't make coffee if it's not in pre-measured pouches and refuse to read directions. Idiots!

We caught wind from someone in the offices about two months ago, that the bank was going to take us over and maybe shut us down. They took control of the property on Monday. Since then, no one has seen or heard from any manager. We haven't seen anyone from the bank. We just show up, punch in, and seem to be completely unsupervised and forgotten about. The funny thing is, it hasn't changed anything around here one bit.

It's kind of weird to wonder if there is going to be a job for you to do when you get to work every day, or if the doors will be locked. When it happens (maybe tomorrow, maybe not) I won't be surprised, maybe a little disappointed though.

I just wanted to ramble for a while and Rayne has to hear it all the time. At least you guys can stop reading when you get tired of it. :D

neverending 04-08-2009 11:11 PM

That totally sucks.

Are you looking?

Dude Guadalupe 04-08-2009 11:32 PM

I am looking, just not too seriously yet. I know that with my solid work history and the good refrences I will have, I can pretty much move on to any other hotel in the area (maybe not The Hampton or The Hilton). The thing is I don't know if I want to stay in the hotel business, but after 3 1/2 years that's where I have the most experience.

I've been thinking about it a lot and I just don't know yet.

X¤MurderDoll¤X 04-08-2009 11:34 PM

hey I wanna get out of the club business and get into the hotel business, we should trade.

You might want to think seriously. Jobs are not that easy to come by these days.

Dude Guadalupe 04-08-2009 11:59 PM

Not even close. On any given night you get truck drivers, groups of drunk people, crack heads. We've had to have prostitues escorted off the property a few times, a lot of random people off of the interstate.

It's about as far from fancy as you can get and the closest you get to a bellhop would be the guy that drives the airport shuttle...if you're lucky.

That's true, but we haven't really gotten much job loss in my area. My hotel is going under due to mis-management.

That's only because you don't look snooty enough...If you REALLY wanted it, you could cut your hair, lose some weight, and become a stuck-up snob.

HA!...At this point, they're lucky they still have a BELL...It's one of the few things that hasn't been repossessed yet:rolleyes:

Jobs have always been plentiful here...Our biggest 'job market' problem has always been job hoppers (people who work somewhere for a short time, then decide to work somewhere else because they either want to try something new, or are moving up for more money...Kinda difficult to keep employees for long periods of time in any one place)...People are kinda spoiled here in that way, it also causes people not to take their jobs as seriously as they should, because they aren't as concerned about getting fired, and often start out not fully committing themselves to staying in the first place...Funny how an abundance of jobs can actually have a downside - For employers mostly.

Many hotels have to deal with this, especially when you're right off the expressway...People come from all over the WORLD...You never know what you're gonna get...And on Friday and Saturday nights (especially) there will always be drunks...Everywhere...Your hotel (even with its problems) is way better than the one across the street, and you know it.

Actually, the manager did the best she could with what she had to work with, in fact she did far more than she should have had to, BECAUSE of what she had to work with...It's amazing the place is even still open...The OWNER is the one who killed it, wasting all the money the hotel made instead of paying the hotel's bills...He shouldn't have been buying expensive furniture (Remember that $15,000 couch he had delivered last year - when the hotel was being threatened with losing electricity?), flying off to Europe whenever he felt like it (even in the last couple of weeks), running up a $7,000 long distance bill at the hotel on his own private account (that still hasn't been paid), and many, MANY other ridiculous things to waste money...The moron spent recklessly, didn't act responsibly in paying bills, and killed the hotel...ONE person destroyed this hotel...YOU could have managed the hotel finances better than he did, and the hotel would be doing fine now...In fact, ANYONE could have done a better job than he did.

or just move to England for a year.

Dude Guadalupe 04-09-2009 03:50 AM

Lose weight, cut my hair, be a snob. I just can't see any of those things happening..........ever.

Papillon Noir 04-09-2009 05:52 AM

I'd start seriously looking. I'm in a bad work situation myself. My boss is a undereducation moronic jerk who i just found out why lying to us that we were being audited, when we actually aren't. On top of that, because of the economy, they have frozen all positions and there will be no raises for at least two years. After 6 months of seriously looking I finally have an interview scheduled. It's never taken me this long to find a job. The market is crap right now.

newb 04-09-2009 08:15 AM

My place is in a bit of trouble as well. Verrrrryyy slooooowww. Many layoffs. I've been here for 22 years......not gonna be easy if it closes down.

I may have to switch to cheaper beer

scouse mac 04-09-2009 08:22 AM

Thats shit hearing about your jobs.

I went through something similar 8 years ago, the job I had was a good one but I never felt secure there, never saw a safe long term job so started applying.

I now drive choo choo trains for a living and my old place of work looks like its closing down after years of downsizing. Look for something asap Dude, dont be a passenger when it comes to your job.

Newb, Im hoping you dont have probs with you job but I cant believe you would compromise on beer choice

OH!...Do you ever come through Erlanger, Kentucky?...Our train station is almost visible from my house...If you came through here, you would only be a few feet away from us...I have sat at the train station with the kids so they could watch the trains...The drivers always wave at them...It would be weird if you were one of them and we never knew it :)

Hmm...Something is afoot at the hotel...

Dustin is on the phone with my sister (Dustin hired her to work at the hotel last year)

I'm hearing things from his end of the phonecall like:

"Definitely something to think about"

"I would accept the manager position if someone was actually going to run it right and pay the bills" (he has turned down the manager position many times in the past - for obvious reasons)

"Well, I'm going in tonight, if they want to meet me, I'll be there"

"Are they taking over as actual owners?"

Sounds pretty interesting...Dustin may not be going anywhere after all

Well this is the situation so far. The people from the bank showed up today and physically took ownership. The one good manager we had has decided to follow the idiot owner into his next great failure. With her gone we lose two maybe three from the desk, our only shuttle driver, two of the three housekeepers we have left, our maintenance guy, most likely the restaurant staff. That will leave us with two or three (depending on who walks) left on the desk, and one housekeeper who's only english consists of "it's ok".

From what I hear so far, they are offering anyone who stays a 10% raise. Although they aren't going to take taxes out of our checks which means I have to pay out in the end, not sure if I want the hassle.

On the other hand, with everyone quitting they are going to need someone who knows what they are doing. I could be in a good spot if they don't end up closing it down.

I guess I'll see what happens.

Just make quarterly estimated tax payments, it's not TOO bad.

Yeah, that's something I'll have to look into (tax prep is my job ;))...I told him to give it a shot and see what happens...I expect him to ride it out to the end, if it ends...If the new owners actually get it all sorted out so that it can start turning a profit again (which of course is their goal, since they have so much invested in it already) he will be in a very good position...And...The hotel will have to do some massive hiring.

Like Scouse said, a very "interesting 24 hours"...And then an equally interesting next few weeks.

Dude Guadalupe 04-09-2009 11:17 AM

Just found out that another desk clerk has decided to stay, at least for a while. I feel a little better about the situation now. She is one of the few that really knows what she's doing.

AND...She's married to the shuttle driver...So that means he'll stay, too :)

Dude Guadalupe 04-09-2009 08:28 PM

So far so good. I haven't met the new boss yet, but so far everyone likes him. Everyone except for the old manager's grandaughter, but she's immature and lacks respect for everyone so she won't last long.

They tell that he was in here earlier passing out cash and credit cards so each department could get the supplies they needed, that really is a nice change. I hear he has all sorts of plans to get this place up and running again.

I'm curious to see how this works out.

neverending 04-09-2009 08:39 PM

Awesome news. Good luck!

Doc Faustus 04-09-2009 08:43 PM

Lately, I've known a lot of people getting short, fake jumps. Myself included. The bank charged me a $180 overdraft that they fixed, putting my account into a positive but told me they filed the paperwork when they hadn't yet. I got a rice crispy treat from the speedway and overdrafted again. Then I called and it got fixed again. Then, I had nightmares for days on end that I had done my girlfriend's taxes wrong and then received a rejected notice, because it turned out I forgot to list the cents column of last year's income. Then, I thought I'd lost a job I was working on, but it turned out somebody else was being reprimanded and I got the email.

neverending 04-09-2009 08:47 PM

Man- what a bunch of nightmares!

I can't tell at this point if I prefer a real mess to a bunch of tiny little immature fakeouts. That's just the writer and fan in me, though. "I paid 9 bucks for this lazy bullshit? Oh...it's not a movie..." But, glad you got your job back, Dude, astrological stuff had been pointing to weird conflicts for Cancers that work out okay.
