This will prob be moved to the movies section I thought the psycho remake was completely pointless, shot for shot the same as the original but with weaker actors. That said the Bodysnatchers and Fly remakes are good shouts, imo ;) There is another Bodysnatchers version made in 1993 with Gabrielle Anwar well worth checking out. The Thing is one of my fav remakes, and Ive also got alot of time for the Night of the Living Dead remake mainly because the Barbara character is a much stronger one. |

As for remakes. I agree with The Fly being good. Also, I actually liked Rob Zombie's Hallowe'en. I just find movies with rednecks scary. I refused to see the remake of Black Christmas because I am such a big fan of the original and couldn't stand to see it ruined. |

I cant believe i forgot to mention Night of the Living Dead! I agree making barbra a stronger character made that movie better in my eyes. I will definatly check out the 93 version thank you. Missmacabre: I didnt want to see that remake because im a fan of the original but a old boyfriend made me watch it with him. It pissed me off so bad how they totally demolished the original in everyway. |
Best remake imo would be JC's The Thing.
For the post-2000 era, Snyder's Dawn of the Dead, followed by Raimi's Ju-On: The Grudge. |

Heres a few i forgot to mention aswell
Worst When a Stranger Calls. The first one wasnt the best but it was better than this one. The Hitcher Village of the Damned. The Best 13 Ghosts. Now i liked the 60s version dont get me wrong but the newer was wasnt bad at all. |

The Thing, The Fly and The Blob rank among my favorites along with Savini's Night Of The Living Dead. Hooper's Invaders From Mars is totally fuckin' killer. More recently I thought The Hills Have Eyes was impressive. Enjoyed Zombie's Halloween, Dawn Of The Dead and the new TCM flicks although they dumbed down the original works. |
Best:
5. "2001 Maniacs" (Tim Sullivan, 2005) 8/10 4. "The Fly" (David Cronenburg, 1986) 8/10 3. "The Toolbox Murders" (Tobe Hooper, 2003) 8/10 2. "The Amityville Horror" (Andrew Douglas, 2005) 9/10 1. "The Ring" (Gore Verbinski, 2002) 9/10 Worst: 5. "The Thing" (John Carpenter, 1982) 4/10 4. "Psycho" (Gus Van Sant, 1998) 3/10 3. "House of Wax" (Jaume Collet-Serra, 2005) 3/10 2. "Dawn of the Dead" (Zack Snyder, 2004) 3/10 1. "Teenage Caveman" (Larry Clark, 2001) 1/10 |
Best
The Thing The Fly 2001 Maniacs Halloween My Bloody Valentine (I know most people woulnt agree on those last two, I rather enjoyed both of them though) Worst ( I havnt seen alot of remakes, not because there remakes, I just thought they would suck. So I skipped them.I skip alot of "orginal" movies for the same reason.) Black Christmas 13 Ghosts House of Wax Halloween 2 When A Stranger Calls |
By far the worst remake I have ever clapped eyes on is When A Stranger Calls.
Best was Rob Zombie's Halloween remake and The Thing I quite liked too. |
Not mentioned so far:
Good remakes: 1) Wizard of Gore 2) The Maltese falcon 3) King Kong (yep i loved this) Shit remakes: 1) Rollerball 2) planet of the Apes 3) the fog I really didn't like the Cape Fear Remake either. |

Hey, I actually liked the 2oo3 Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, 2oo6's "The Beginning" was a lousy movie though, I actually liked the 2oo3 TCSM movie, better than the 1974 Predecessor.

Can't really say anything different than has already been mentioned in this thread, the lists all pretty much sum up my opinion. Not many people seem to like The Blob remake, I thought it was pretty good. They killed a kid which is annoyingly rare...
|
I never really counted 2001 Maniacs as a remake. It was more of a sequel/homage to 2000 Maniacs to me.

That movie is one of the many reasons why I think that Gus Van Sant should be shot in the face. ... I have a hard time considering remakes in either a "Best" or "Worst" category. I consider a remake either "Good," "OK," or "Just unnecessary." Definitions:
Good
OK
Unnecessary

I did like how Cady looked - his character was sorta a mix of the original and his character from Night of the Hunter (the 'religious' diatribes etc). I do think Mitchum's speech in the original about letting his wife 'work' her way home is really chilling. |

A movie with a plot hole or even a bad/weak ending may needs a 'remake' but a good movie or a popular one amongst its target audience doesn't need to be remade. So in that point more or less all remakes so far came out were actually unnecessary. But who cares? still remakes of popular, acclaimed or successful old school and foreign horror films are being made or in progress to be come out as a 'secure' money making venture and we also see them eventually to 'judge' how pointless/bad or 'surprisingly good' the effort was. Anyway, according to Chrono's classification/definition my list would be... The Grudge - Okay. My Bloody Valentine 3D - Okay, I think the original is the better one. Quote:
House on Haunted Hill - Okay. Wizard of Gore - Haven't seen the original yet, but as a movie it's an interesting one. Willard - GOOD. Haven't seen the original but love this version anyway. Thirteen Ghosts - Okay. House of Wax - As a modern horror film it's okay but definitely needed a different title for sure. As a remake of Price's version...it's a disgrace. Quote:
Halloween - Very daring! As a Rob Zombie film, it's a masterpiece! But as a remake of 78's slasher sensation it's surely unnecessary. Dawn of the Dead - Same as House of Wax. It'd better if it had a different title...like Mall of the Dead or something like that.:) Friday the 13th - Unnecessary but 'stupendous'! King Kong - Good. Godzilla - Okay. Planet of the Apes - Haven't fully seen neither the original nor the remake. With due respect to Zero, I need to say that personally I hate monkey people. The Wickerman - Utterly unnecessary. Psycho - It was a serious Sin. Crime of the century. The Hitcher - Poor effort resulting unnecessary. The Haunting - Utterly unnecessary. The Fog - Unnecessary. The Thing - Same as Willard. One of the greatest for all time. The Ring - Okay. The Fly - Liked the original more. Only one reason is enough...the original has Vincent Price...the remake doesn't. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - My guilty pleasure. An absolute blast for me. 3 years ago..this is the movie that made me become a regular horror movie viewer. Dragged me into the genre. Pretty grateful to it. The Hills have eyes - Good. Mirrors - Unnecessary. Uninvited (A Tale of two sisters remake) - Okay. When A Stranger Calls - Lame effort. Unnecessary. 2001 Maniacs - Haven't seen the original yet, but as a film I enjoyed it. |
Haven't seen many remakes (or many movies in general compared to you lot), but the one that sticks out like a sore thumb is Psycho (1998). It's more that a remake - it's the same movie, but without that charm. Any way, a waste of film.

best:
Dawn Of The Dead Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Fly Black Christmas (barely lol) worst: Halloween The Ring The Grudge Prom Night Dan |

Best Remakes: Night of the Living Dead (1990 Savini) Dawn of the Dead (2004 Snyder) The Grudge (2004) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) Evil Dead II (1987.. I consider it a re-make and not a sequel) The Thing (1982) Worst Remakes: Shutter (2008) Pulse (2006) Friday the 13th (2009) The Amityville Horror (2005) Dark Water (2005) The Haunting (1999) The Wicker Man (2006) |
My favorite remakes:
The Last House on the Left (this is a remake I believe, though never saw the orignal but thought this movie was really good, is this a horror though?) Halloween 1/2 (Don't care what anyone says I found Zombies Halloweens much more enjoyable than any of the older ones) Remakes I didn't like The Grudge The Ring The Omen Never saw the originals just know I don't like the remakes. Eagerly Anticipating: A Nightmare on Elm Street (The original is one of my 3 favorite horror movies as of right now so I'm hoping that don't butcher it) |

Not to mention, sitting around the mall was redundant and unnecessary and they were brought down by a ridiculously STOOPID move. The beginning was fantastic. The VERY end was fantastic. Everything in the interim was silly. |

Wicker Man's the worst. No nudity, no cool folk music, no Christopher Lee, no religious subtext, Nicholas Cage runs like a girl and I want to see him drown in his tears of shame.

It's the perfect example.
|
Some other actor that runs even more like a girl should star in remakes of every film Nicholas Cage was ever successful in. If I had a camera, I'd run around like a girl and splice footage of me into Nicholas Cage movies.
|
...but wait, did we forget the infamous "bear-suit bitch knockout" scene?!?!?
Tell me that wasn't Oscar worthy... |
