Antichrist (2009)

It would appear that Lars Von Trier's latest film, Antichrist, is creating quite a stir at Cannes...

http://www.smh.com.au/news/entertain...498733956.html

This sounds like a very interesting film. Can't wait to see it.

Ferox13 05-19-2009 01:58 AM

Ddin't realise that was a Von Trier movies - cool - need to see this..

Angra 05-19-2009 02:01 AM

With such different response and reviews it's a must-see for us horror fans.

YAY!!

Elvis_Christ 05-19-2009 02:19 AM

The Idiots totally blew me away so I'm keen to see more of his flicks.

fortunato 05-19-2009 03:38 PM

Yeah, I've been reading some very interesting reviews for this myself.
Although I did hear that it might be cut considerably once it's distributed, which I hope isn't true.

That will always be the risk. I am certain that in Australia it would be either cut or banned, given the description of the content. There is a much better chance of an uncut US release. Hope it happens.

_____V_____ 05-19-2009 09:37 PM

Hopefully I ll get my hands on one of the copies when its "released" here.

btw welcome back, Manchestr. Stick around. You were missed.

Angra 05-19-2009 09:44 PM

I heard in the morning news that all the sensitive parts of the world gets a cut release, including USA.

The danish release will most definitely be uncut.

neverending 05-19-2009 09:58 PM

Should be an uncut video release though.

Thanks mate, I appreciate it.

I will also do my best to get hold of it, does anyone know when it might get a DVD release anywhere?

alkytrio666 05-20-2009 07:05 AM

This looks incredible- Von Trier always has a horror-toned style, so this should work nicely. It's nice to see a polished and professional director making an entry into the genre, rather than an adequate television director selected by Michael Bay.

_____V_____ 05-20-2009 07:45 AM

From the Hollywood Reporter:

Declaring himself "the world's greatest director," 53-year-old Dane Lars von Trier defended his enfant terrible title with aplomb at the Monday news conference for his Cannes Competition shocker "Antichrist."

It started with a shouting match between Daily Mail columnist Baz Bamigboye and other members of the press corps, with Bamigboye demanding von Trier "explain and justify" the explicit sexual gore in his film and another journo in the audience yelling "He's an artist, you're not. He doesn't have to explain anything!"

And he didn't.

On questions both abusive and toadying, von Trier maintained his autistic savant persona, deliberately avoiding any explanation of "Antichrist," alternatively mocking or dismissing his interrogators.

"I don't have to explain anything. You are all my guests here, not the other way round," von Trier said. "Anyway, I don't think about the audience when I make a film. I don't care. I make films for myself."

Von Trier did defend his use of nausea-inducing imagery -- including a bloody masturbation scene and a leg-drilling sequence that could have been cribbed from the "Saw" franchise -- as artistic "honesty," saying to leave the shockers out would have been "like lying."

He also insisted he was not playing a joke on the audience but meant everything, from the film's talking fox to the closing dedication to Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky, a dedication that drew howls of laughter at last night's press screening, to be taken seriously.

But, as always, von Trier tried to have it both ways, joking that it was "a bit of a pity" one can't actually kill people on screen and putting the blame for the most extreme scenes on lead actress Charlotte Gainsbourg.

"Charlotte took it too far. I tried to, but I just couldn't stop her," von Trier quipped.

I saw the trailer a few weeks ago and thought it looked really good. Now after reading this, this film just looks amazing! Really taking you to a much deeper level of experience than I originally anticipated.

fortunato 05-20-2009 09:12 AM

Haha, von Trier is a crazy bastard.
Still excited for this one, though. A movie like this hasn't been quite so hyped up in a long time.

neverending 05-20-2009 11:04 AM

Rod posted this link in his Gaillo thread, but the first paragraph is all about Antichrist. Interesting comments:

Elvis_Christ 05-20-2009 04:56 PM

What other flicks of his are worth watching? I love the impact his work leaves on you. The Idoits had me laughing, shocked and quite bummed out a real experience.

fortunato 05-20-2009 05:20 PM

Dancer in the Dark is wow intense.
I also really enjoyed Zentropa. Criterion just put out an excellent release of that one.

Elvis_Christ 05-20-2009 05:36 PM

I saw Dancer in the Dark on the big screen when it came out. Nothing short of amazing. I'll have to give Zentropa a spin.

hellfire1 05-20-2009 07:28 PM

Breaking the Waves

alkytrio666 05-20-2009 09:03 PM

Elvis, lemme second the Zentropa recommendation. It's an immersive experience.

Zero 05-24-2009 06:48 AM

the five obstructions is amazing! anyone who likes film or art in general should watch it (and von trier is the mastermind behind the whole thing)

i'll check out the anti-christ but the whole 'talking fox' seems very odd to me

Staal 05-28-2009 02:52 AM

Gonna check this one out this weekend.

I loved Breaking The Waves & Dancer In The Dark, so I can't wait to see Trier take a shot at the horror genre. + He's a fellow dane, yay!

IFC is giving Lars von Trier's "Antichrist" a pre-Halloween release in Los Angeles and New York, with the film to go out Oct. 23.

IFC, the biggest buyer at this year's Cannes Film Festival, snapped up the psychological erotic-horror title during the fest.

Pic, which has sexually explicit content, stars Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe. Meta Louise Foldager produced and Peter Aalbaek Jensen and Peter Garde exec produced.

The Cannes jury presented Gainsbourg with its actress award.

IFC will widen the theatrical release after the platform launch.

The company, which usually releases theatrical titles simultaneously on video-on-demand, has set a VOD date of Oct. 21 for "Antichrist."

Angra 06-24-2009 11:39 PM

Great..

At that time it will be out on DVD over here.

Zero 06-26-2009 06:49 AM

i'll see it if just to see gainsbourgh's performance

Ferox13 07-28-2009 02:45 PM

I liked it - a bit slow to start. It's a weird mixture of the his dogma style and some very stylised cinematography.

fuglystick 07-28-2009 02:54 PM

I will...probably not be rushing to see this one. Not really my thang.

Elvis_Christ 07-28-2009 06:45 PM

Shit I think I missed the last screening of this last night becasue I've been down with the flu :(

There was a talking Anteater in the King version of Kingdom Hospital - don't think there was anything similar in the original - long time ssince i seen it.

Staal 08-10-2009 04:57 AM

Anyone had a chance to watch this masterpiece?

I caught it a few months ago at the local cinema, and I was blown away. Films like these are rare. Finally one that really made an impression.

I somehow get the feeling, that you either hate or love this film. I went with a mate and my girlfriend. My mate and I both agreed that this was a breath of fresh air. However, my girlfriend found it to be the most dumb and meaningless film she had ever seen.

Looking forward you hearing from you guys about this one.

I'd recommend it.

Disease 08-13-2009 10:07 AM

It's screening for 4 days here next week, I'm planning to catch it then.

Ferox13 08-13-2009 02:30 PM

About 12-14 people walked out during it here too...

ChronoGrl 08-14-2009 04:43 AM

Reading the reviews, it doesn't seem to be my cup of tea, so I'm proceeding with caution... I love hearing what you guys think, though. Will definitely shape whether or not I'm going to check it out.

celtickitty60 08-16-2009 03:17 PM

Hmmmm, this one sounds interesting. Not sure if I want to see it or not yet, LOL.

fortunato 10-21-2009 02:12 PM

Man, I read that after Hallowe'en, this will be getting a wider US theatrical release.

I certainly hope this is true. I can't wait to see this.

The Mothman 10-21-2009 02:49 PM

Im going to see the premier at IFC in NYC, should be sweet, hope i can get tickets in time.

p1zl3 10-22-2009 04:22 PM

All I'm going to say is, "full vittle-view female castration" and " forced blood/semen ejaculation"...
That's the brilliance that this sh*t-box of a film has to offer... It tries to fake sophistication with utter perversion. I didn't think the world was stupid enough to go for this film, but apparently the 6.9/10 rating on IMdB says otherwise.

novakru 10-22-2009 05:47 PM

I have to see this
