In search of the perfect twist
...in movie history.
(***WARNING - THIS MIGHT BE A HUGE SPOILER-HEAVY THREAD***) Thinking back to all the flicks I have watched till now, it comes down to these final five (according to me) -
Two Honorable Mentions - The Sixth Sense and The Others. If you ask me to choose any ONE from the above 5, I MIGHT choose The Usual Suspects (although Night and Seven make one hell of an impact). What are your choices? Discuss. |
Harold & Maude.
Carrie Brazil- the ORIGINAL ending. |
I'm sure alot of people might disagree but I didnt see the ending in Saw coming.
|
Memento
12 Monkeys and who could forget the twist in The Crying Game.....WOAH...hello.. |
Usual Suspects, hands down...

And Memento has a real kickass twist. Quote:
Some pretty solid choices so far. Keep thinking of more, folks. Don't worry, you can discuss the twists itself pretty freely because I put a Spoiler warning right at the beginning of the thread. |
Watch the entire filmography of M. Night Shyamalalanalmlalman...
And kick yourself for thinking he'd surprise you. |
Unbreakable

Nobody thinks about Fight Club eh? That was the first one that popped into my head, I'll have to think of some others. Oh, wait, Vertigo had a great twist too. I'm tired, I'm sure I'll think of plenty.

Anyone remember "Fallen" with Denzel Washington?

I'm not being a dick, but I'm rarely impressed by twist endings. The ending of Se7en genuinely surprised me. Another surprise with Se7en was Kevin Spacey. All through the early chase scenes I was joking with my friend "Dude, it's Keyser Soze!" Turns out I was right.
The last zombie in Rec scared the hell out of me. I'd already had the final shot ruined for me by the trailer for Quarantine, but still... |

This thread should end, or be deleted.
Nothing good can come from ruining the endings of films or cluing poeple into the fact that the film they are about to watch has a twist. If you know a twist is coming, you start hunting for it, which undermines the drama and can ruin a film. As a viewer, I try to go along for the ride and never try to "figure it out" because that can only undermine the drama of a situation. |
Saw, Fight Club, Memento, Oldboy and The Other...love them all.
I like to add two of my favorite classics....The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) & Les Diabolique.:) |

Just finished watching Secret Window on cable. Good little twist in the tale, that one too (although it might have been predictable). |

Inside had an alright little twist. (I know it's not a movie but) Knights of the Old Republic had an awesome twist worthy of any movie. Also, after thinking about it for a while, I thought High Tension's was ok. _V_, you need this t-shirt. http://www.themovieblog.com/wp-conte...er-t-shirt.jpg |
Scarlet Street, The Wicker Man and to a certain degree Reanimator

although i do agree with this to a point - i've foind that even if somone mentioned there was a twist before you see a film .. if its a good film you become engrossed in it and totally forget it's coming. at least - i'm able to do that. if the film is so shitty and ham fisted that they're projecting what is to come with obvious foreshadowing.. it wont matter, its a crap film anyway. |
