Did Paranormal Activity’s low-fi creepiness make you think every creaking floorboard and groaning pipe in your house was portent to ghostly goings-on? Oren Peli’s $15,000 horror flick clocked up an amazing amount of hype and box office…to the tune of $151 million dollars.

As success dictates sequels, it was inevitable there would be Paranormal Activity 2 coming to scare us all again, just when we all thought it was safe to go back to suburbia.

Yes, it is happening and it has got a director attached.

Heat Vision Blog have it that the man who gave us Saw VI, Kevin Greutert, has been hired to make it.

Are you scared yet? You should be.

Oren Peli has given his support to the venture, but will only return as executive producer. He has spoken of the sequel, saying:

“These guys get it, and the fans won’t be disappointed.”

So what can we expect? Buckets of grue and eviscerations a la Saw? Probably not. This is also not a direct follow-up either. Instead, scriptwriter Michael R Perry has bashed out a new story and will probably be more of the same.

Or will it?

This is pure Hollywood exploitation of an unexpected hit film.

Paramount will surely have to ramp it up a little in terms of effects and “happenings”. Let’s just hope it doesn’t turn into Poltergeist 2…or 3. They’ll be high expectations for this title come Halloween. And please, somebody end the Saw franchise!

Though I have no expectations but I guess I'll give it a watch as soon as it gets a release here...you know, I eventually like to see all the good & crap remakes & sequels all the time.:rolleyes:

Please hollywood stop doing this to anyting that is popular in movies. Its worse with horror cause we are the most devoted fans. Movies just plain mean more to us. Any good idea gets scooped up and high paid directors and producers ruin it immediatly. For the time being we at least have the french to thank for some original horror. Did i just say that about the french?

c'mon guys - it is bound to be as good as Blair Witch 2 . . . (oh wait, that sucked rancid ass - nevermind)

Kip Williams to Direct Paranormal Activity 2

Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli announced this morning that Tod 'Kip' Williams (The Door in the Floor) will direct the sequel.

"I have some awesome news for the fans of 'Paranormal Activity,'" Peli said. "Director Kip Williams will join us for the next chapter of the story. We are thrilled to have Kip working with us. He is the guy we want at the helm, because he knows exactly what we want to deliver to the fans... and I can't wait to be a part of what he's putting together. I don't want to spoil the story but I promise it'll surprise you. Stay tuned."

Made for about $15,000, Paranormal Activity became a box office hit as it earned $151 million worldwide.

The sequel starts filming in May and is scheduled to hit theaters on October 22. Peli, Jason Blum, Steven Schneider are producing and Akiva Goldsman will executive produce.

To me, that doesn't seem to be a movie that really needs a sequel, but if it is as good as the first one, mine as well go see it.

Well, they totally left the story wide open at the end, so you could see it coming.

Fair enough, but I felt the opened ending was more of a horror tactic to be a bit more unsettling. It kind of make me wonder if they can play off the first one and still keep that really suspenseful feel. There is a couple ideas running my head how they could do it, but it probably would be easier to kind of branch off more than to play off the first one.

If you payed attention to the story, they showed how the demon has been inhabiting a series of young women. At the end they tell how the police found the man's body, but hers was nowhere to be found. So, she is out there possesed by the demon, or has become the demon. We'll meet some new characters and she, as the demon will start tormenting them. They may even have the new victim be a child, since in the first one they dropped hints about how the woman had been experiencing phenomina since she was a kid.

Well that's kind of what I was thinking they should do, but what I was wondering is if they would just leave her and have the demon bother someone else or actually include her into the next one.

The challenge will be making a film as original and startling as the first. It wasn't the story that made Paranormal Activity so good- really it's just a standard possesion tale. What made the film was the self-reflective technique of making the video image itself part of the plot. They will have a challenge to equal the first.

If they do the video thing again, it will just be repeating the first film. If they just tell a standard follow up story, what will make it stand out?

Hollywood.......gotta love it. ANd just wait until the Paranormal Activity 2 bonus UNCUT, UNEDITED, Directors cut DVD comes out. OOOOOH I cant wait.

I dont understand. Original? The blair witch project was filmed with the same "technique" and I think it was much better, in a way almost believable. I have to admit I did sit through the whole movie telling myself'" ok, something good is about to happen to make this worthwhile" just to justify myself sitting there waiting for something worthwhile to happen. It never did. I had my suspicions from the get go that it would be "that type of movie" simply because "they couldnt show you but 3 seconds of the movie in the trailer. Heck if they would have shown anymore no one would have watched it. was it the worst movie I have ever seen? not by a long shot, but it is a movie I would encourage people not to waste their time with. As for a sequel, lets hope not.

You are correct, those first three words do pretty much sum it up for me.Thats why I put them there. The rest of the words just explain why I posted the first three. If you would be so kind as to help me understand.

Correct me if I am wrong but is that not exactly what was done in the Blair Witch. as far as using a "home" video image as part of the plot, its been done in several movies like cloverfield, quarantine, zombie diaries, [rec] 1 & 2, the st. francisville experiment, zero day, the fourth kind, september tapes, death of a ghost hunter, diary of the dead, district 9..........so what i dont understand is how that aspect of the film could be considered original.

As far as my opinion of the movie,to each his own. I understand the movie itself and the plot or how slow it was is not what made it bad to me. What I didnt like about it was the believability factor and the Hype they tried to give it in the previews.Ultimately it led to disapointment. I am a ghost story nut so paranormal type movies are what really get me going.This movie was supposed to be an actual account of what happened through their own video camera and for that to work it has to be believable.
If the sequel is anything like the first one they should have used one of the original endings and left it at that. The director they have for the second one might make it worthwhile, guess we'll just have to wait till October to see.

Blair Witch was nowhere near as effective as Paranormal Activity. Sure it did it a long time before it but it was more a successful case in marketing rather than any sort of ground breaking cinema.

PA was something special and was infinitely more classy than Cloverfield, [REC] and Diary of the Dead.

I hope the sequel does the original justice.

1st off, they use the camera in a different manner than Blair Witch in how they build suspense and how they correlate with the story. With using the fast forward technique they were able to play with the audience's head by telling them "when they slows down, something is suppose to happen." With small things happening each night people were constantly on edge waiting for something big to happen. If they had a big thing for every night, then the entertaining factor of a build up would lose all of its intensity.

2nd off, the footage in the film was not suppose to be the "true story" they based it off of. One of the people who helped work on the film was connected to a paranormal investigative team where they have stocks of videos with clips similar to some of the stuff in the movie.

How the movie was built was very original and takes after Hitchcockian styled suspense and horror.

ok, ill give you that, I dont remember seeing any other movies that use time lapse to build suspense in that way. So not so much original in the sense of using home cameras but in how they are used.


I didnt mean it was supposed to be the true story, just that it is supposed to be portrayed as a true story of what happened to this perticular couple through their own camera. Could be that im just picking it apart too much, which I do alot.
Maybe one of these days everyone will see my version of suspense and terror.

As far as marketing goes paranormal activity definately fall into that catagory. it was a film that would have never made it to theaters had it not been for the great marketing. Showing us trailers of the audience freaking out to show us it was so scary instead of letting scenes from the movie do it. There were not enough scenes in the movie to make an interesting trailer, dont think people sleeping and a burning ouija board would have done it so they use a great marketing campaign to get people to watch it.

If anyone wants to, make your own trailer of the movie using only scenes from the movie and it actually be good and show the suspence and be better than the "theater audience" trailer and I will officially bow to you. I dont think it can be done

I watched the trailer a few days ago, and had read somewhere that it was removed from some theaters for being too scary........It wasn't that bad in my opinion( not scary enough to be removed from theaters at least). I do hope its scarier than the first one though.

Oh god no. Sure, Paranormal Activity was a nice movie all in all. Didn't find it too scary because of certain clichées. Like foot prints of a 'demon' that looked more like the one of a reptile (or a goddamn ostrich) and the whole banshee screeching thing going on. And the ending(s) were all pretty boring. Like someone simply had run out of ideas. But still, it had some great moments.

I simply fear that the sequal will have quite a budget to work on and of course they will use it. Making it as flat as most horror movies out there right now. More clichées and most likely lots of added 'special effects' with blood and gore. .. Well, I like blood and gore but I don't find it scary. At. All. So basically the things I liked in the first movie may very likely be replaced with the very same clichées I didn't like in it.

But yeah, that's just my opinion.

Am I the only one who really doesn't know how to feel about this movie?
I mean I like the first one but not to the extent where I would buy it.

Paranormal Activity 2 is playing a wicked game with us, you know. A clue here, a hint there, and whatever you thought you knew, you suddenly don't.

Sure we've seen that frame before from the trailer. In the trailer we saw snapshots of this baby (a baby, this baby, another baby, who knows?), held in the arms of two people, another shot of the same child crawling into the middle of the road.

Then elsewhere in the trailer a dark female figure appears in the doorway. Is it Katie from the original Paranormal Activity? Is it someone entirely different? Is it another woman possessed by the same demon?

What could that dog be barking at? Could it have something to do with the fact that our little baby friend there doesn't have a reflection in the mirror?

Possibly.

And that's only the beginning.

A new version of the trailer has been released on the movie's official site. An initial run though doesn't seem to reveal anything out of the ordinary.

Watch it again.

This time, around the half-way point of the trailer, when you see the kitchen, take your mouse and drag the progress bar back a few seconds. (It isn't an exact science; give it a couple of tries.)

The trailer seems to take over and we're "treated" to some seriously fear-inducing images.

I liked the original PA. I found the characters annoying, but overall it was a effective thriller. I think a part of its tremendous success were the subtle shock scares it offered. Its the only movie where moving bedsheets can phase me. The mainstream audience really only looks for jump scares in their horror, nowadays.(and maybe some gore) And I can definitely see why it gained such popularity.

The first movie was sorta built on the tense stationary camera scenes, with the story cut in between. I don't see how PA2 or any of the following sequels will be any different. I do hate redundant sequels, but that wont stop hollywood from running franchises into the ground and then some. That said, I will be seeing PA2 as I will the "last" Saw sequel.

The baby is clearly significant. I'm wondering if it's perhaps a prequel? Then again, I've heard both Micah and Katie will be in it again (not sure how!)

Can't wait. Hopefully this is as good as the original... if not better.

Definately gotta see the first one by Halloween...the trailer for two was pretty shit-your-pants scary even though so little happened - that's seems pretty good IMO :eek:

yeah...PA was decent and I can wait till the PA2 dvd hits here but it seems this time it'll be more fun packed...means full with more creepy stuffs than the first one. :)

I am so scared that the dog is going to die and ruin the whole movie for me. :(

I'll pass on this. I didn't like the first one at all. Just didn't do it for me, didn't find it scary at all.
Of course, I didn't like Blair Witch the first time I saw it either and now I love it. So, who knows? Maybe I'll rent it from NetFlix when it comes around.

I'm on the fence.

I enjoyed this film but I think only because I viewed it with people who were actually frightened, screaming and jumping at the right parts. I think if I had of watched this on my own I would have been bored but having seen others scared it helped me experience the film. I grew up looking after my little sister, sitting with her until she fell asleep when scared, so I think I grew out of the "things that go bump in the night" really quick. That said, if I was to wake up in the middle of the night with my partner standing at the edge of the bed staring at me, I think I would be a little disturbed.
