Recent Films 2006 -

This is a list of the best horror films I've seen from 2006 - present
Paranormal Activity
Cloverfield
The Mist
The Host
1408
The Happening (I know the ending is weak, but it was worth it)
Drag Me To Hell
The Ruins
Joshua
Let The Right One In
Eden Lake
Lady In The Water
Behind The Mask-The Rise Of Leslie Vernon

I could take or leave most of those flicks on your list tbh with the exception of Paranormal Activity, The Mist and Let The Right One In.

Off the top of my head a handful of the best ones for me would be:

Inside
The House Of The Devil
Pontypool
Mum & Dad
Gutterballs

I liked The Happening. There, I said it. Who wants some?

Movies not mentioned :

[Rec]
Ils
Orphanage
Martyrs

TheWickerFan 04-23-2010 04:28 AM

You're right about The Orphanage (for some reason I thought it was released in 2005). Excellent Movie. [Rec] or Quarantine (as the two films are virtually identical) is also worth seeing.
Even though it's not strictly a horror movie, I felt I should mention The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Absolutely top-notch.

The Krell 04-23-2010 11:06 AM

Trick R Treat
The Host
Trailer Park of Terror
Hatchet
..to name a few.Loved all of these for many reasons.

A lot of those I thought were crap, and yes, Doc, I will fight you.

Solid post-2006 horror:
  • Paranormal Activity
  • Paranormal Entity (seriously!)
  • The Host
  • Drag Me To Hell
  • Let The Right One In
  • Inside
  • Ils
  • The Orphanage
  • Crazy Eights
  • Borderland
  • Mulberry Street
  • 28 Weeks Later
  • The Signal
  • Trick R Treat
  • [rec]
  • Quarantine
  • Mum & Dad (though it's REALLY not my genre...)
  • Bug
  • Fido
  • Planet Terror
  • Severance
  • Murder Party
  • The Cabin
  • Sunshine
  • Death Proof

TheWickerFan 04-23-2010 12:38 PM

Trick R Treat and 28 Weeks Later are also very good films. The Grindhouse duo seemed to be in a category all its own, so I didn't think to count it.

I must try to catch Inside. I've heard a lot of positive things about it.

It's absolutely fantastic - HIGHLY recommend it!

Also - Forgot: House of the Devil. Finally watched it the other week. It's brilliant.

Hey Chrono- how bout Home Movie... or was it Home Movies?

Elvis_Christ 04-24-2010 05:54 PM

Shit I forgot about Fido, Trick R Treat and Bug. Brilliant stuff for sure.

Borderland and Severance were terrible and illustrate how artistically bankrupt and derivative a lot of the genre's out put has been over the last decade. I personally wouldn't put them on a list like this... but it does point out how a good 90% of recent horror flicks are average at best.

roshiq 04-26-2010 05:00 AM

Here are some others that also I think worth to mention:

2006:
The Descent
The Hills have eyes
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
Right at your Door
Silent Hill
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning

2007:
Alone (Thai Horror)
Dead Silence
Frontier(s)
Rob Zombie's Halloween
Mr. Brooks
Stuck
Teeth

2008:
The Cottage (2008)

2009:
Grace
Halloween II
Triangle

TheWickerFan 04-26-2010 05:38 AM

I thought The Descent was made in 2005; if not, it would be at the top of my list.
Mr. Brooks was a great film too.

iSeymore 05-01-2010 08:37 AM

I don't care..
- Rob Zombie's Halloween (2007)
- Rob Zombie's Halloween II (2009)
- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
- Friday the 13th (2009)
- A Nightmare on Elm street (2010)
- Grindhouse presents: Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof" (2007)
- Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
- Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects (2005)

Yes! Home Movie was FANTASTIC - Forgot to mention it here - gave it a nod in the Bad Seed thread.

YOU'RE terrible. OH - SNAP.

Why do people on HDC hate on Severance? I thought it was a lot of fun. People liked The Cabin, but hated Severance?

Borderland definitely had its weaknesses, but it shocked me a bit when I saw it in the theater. I still maintain it's a great indie movie, though I've only watched it once; who knows if it'll stand up after repeat viewings...

YES. Good call. Most of the movies on your list I haven't seen - I shall update my Netflix queue. :D

Everything in Borderland has just been done 100000000000000000000000 times before over the last five or six years, there was some nicely filmed scenes here and there tho I'll give it that. A lot better than Turistas but totally mehhhhhh.

I wanted to like Severance but I just found it annoying. Never seen The Cabin because I figured it would be the same kinda deal. Horror Comedies are something that's very hit and miss for me. I prefer more subtlety.

Yeh man. I like unintentional laughs at a films expense and get more of a kick out of them than conventional comedies :)

TheWickerFan 05-05-2010 05:28 AM

I agree, Elvis. The horror movies that are done in deadly earnest , but just make you laugh are the most entertaining.

neverending 05-05-2010 08:42 AM

However- Maximum Overdrive doesn't fit that bill.

Elvis_Christ 05-05-2010 04:43 PM

Killer soda machine = comedy gold :)

neverending 05-05-2010 05:18 PM

But it's not UNINTENDED humor.

Part of me actually thinks that it was somewhat serious but no you're right.

Still you get the kinds of films I was talking about anyways...
