Eli Roth's "Clown"
Eli Roth has signed on to produce two horror projects for Cross Creek Pictures and Vertebra Films.
The first project is Clown, the story of “a loving father who dons a clown outfit and make-up to perform at his son’s sixth birthday, only to later discover the costume — red nose and wig included — will not come off, and his own personality changing in horrific fashion." To break the curse of the evil outfit, the father must make grim choices with his own family facing danger. He and his family race to break the curse of the evil outfit before he undergoes a complete transformation into a homicidal killer with over-sized shoes. A fake trailer for the film made the rounds around the internet a couple of weeks ago, and included Eli Roth’s name in its faux credits. Boldly splashing industry names such as Lionsgate, Screen Gems and Roth himself, the HOSTEL-esque trailer gained Ford and Watts immediate notoriety and meetings with Roth, Prince and Oliver. The trailer got Roth’s attention: “I was blown away when I saw that Clown trailer. Everyone thought it was real, or that I had at least made a fake trailer. I called the guys right away and their first response was ‘Thank you for not suing us!’ I said ‘Sue you? Let’s make this into a real film!’ They are incredibly talented, smart guys ready to make their feature debut.” Jon Watts will direct from a script he will co-write with Christopher D. Ford. Watts has directed numerous commercials as well as music videos for artists including Fatboy Slim and TV On The Radio. Production is aiming for the first quarter in 2011. |
I am not sure what to say, the only word that seems to come to mind is "interesting". The fake trailer actually made this a believable idea, but on what level? While I do think this film would have great potential, I am a bit worried if it would be good enough to work beyond the festival circuit, but who knows. They've made good movies from weirder ideas.

Eli Roth IS a Clown.
Sorry but Hostel took things too far IMO |
what a strange concept for a film.

I'm a big Eli Roth fan too. I'd much rather see one of his films(which I find original and refreshing) as opposed to some remake.

I liked Hostel as well. Even liked Hostel 2.

While I love boobs and blood buckets as much as the next guy, this just felt misdirected. The first half of the film is almost comical with the American Pie-ish guys desperate to get laid, it's like some silly college flick. And then all of a sudden things get so dark and sordid and there's a basement and some blood and oh isn't that the guy from the train and then somehow escaping this madness with Ms. Technicolor Ju-on in tow and then... ..the ending. The ending which was supposed to be 'a shocking unexpected twist' where the main character becomes a product of a sick environment and goes from all American goody to vengeful gore master. It's so friggin' predictable that I almost laughed. So there you have it, albeit a bit short and in an auxiliary language. |
So we're going to see Eli Roth Presents platered over everything now? Still this looks interesting enough and I'll more than likely check it out.
I'm honestly still waiting on Roth to deliver on all of the hype surrounding him. I found Hostel pretty forgettable especially seeing as 90% of recent horror flicks follow this exact formula (Wolf Creek, Eden Lake et all) and it's like the same movie over and over again. Plus the characters were really unlikeable. I found the Hostel Part II more interesting tbh although it's ending was rushed and kinda killed it. |
Wierd concept for a film but it is an original one so ill it give it that. Seems like Clownhouse meets The Stepfather. Bet the producers wish that WAS the trailer for it. Chances are thiers wont be as scary.

What? Seriously? That looked terrible. Might be passable if it was ironic, much like his Thanksgiving, but it just looks... laughable. Or IS it supposed to be ironic and I'm just not getting it? |

I think it's a new way of sharing an idea...today perhaps some studios/producers haven't got time to see/judge the potential of a concept/story through their imagination while reading it/the script. |
