I agree! Maybe the problem is that monsters were a product of another time. We rarely see new monsters anymore either. I would definitely love to see more monsters in modern horror too... preferably monsters that don't date teenage girls :p

No....if you were old [ like myself] you would have said "Frankenstein, The Wolfman, The Mummy or Dracula.......lets not forget The Creature [ from the Black Lagoon]

I love monsters but in the real sense, not evil men.Monsters like King-Kong,The Relic,Cloverfield,The Thing,The Blob, that kind of stuff.

I hear people cite that humans are the scariest monsters of all since they are real. I tend to think that while that might be true, monsters in the more traditional sense can certainly be just as scary. One of my favorite movies that I like to cite as one of the most scariest is The Thing. Everytime I watch that movie, I always get a sense of dread.

Another thing I hear people fight on is practical vs. digital effects. Seems more people are interested in practical effects when it comes to creatures. This is ever more true around Horror fans. Personally I think a hybrid creation of practical and digital effects is a nice way to go.

dlevanchuk 07-08-2013 03:12 PM

One of the most underrated monster movies imho is "Feast" and "Feast II:Sloppy Seconds".

Such a shame that it was straight to DVD release :(

I agree. I think a lot of people like the practical effects for nostalgic reasons.
For me, the problem is that now graphics are so realistic, filmakers can show the entire creature/monster/alien, which obliterates most of the scare factor. In the days of practical effects, the limitation meant that it had to remain mostly hidden, and that was the key to its success. Compare Alien to Alien Ressurection. Classic vs. pure sh*t.
As for the hybrid aproach, that's what they did for the prequel of The Thing, and I really liked it.

There are a few examples creeping around....I particularly liked the 'crawlers' from The Descent. Although the sequel was, predictably, pants.

Though I disagree with the choices of monsters mentioned by the O.P, I completely agree with the sentiment.
The greatest monsters were true anti-heroes to me whereas the likes of Hannibal Lector are just repulsive (effective though)
I mention Hannibal Lector as it seems that the traditional movie monster died a death some time around the release of silence of the lambs.
Personally I believe that the well has run dry and the humble monster cannot captivate modern audiences like before.
I'm probably wrong though and I certainly hope I am.

Hypothermia is a pretty decent monster flick that just came out recently. The creature itself looks like a man in a rubber suit, but the characters are well written and the suspense is well crafted so it's a good movie overall.
As for human monsters, I quite enjoyed The Collector as well as the sequel, The Collection. Those were really fun movies.

Pyramid Head will forever haunt my dreams. Silly, mutinous monsters don't do much for me these days. I want a monster that has many human characteristics so that I can relate in some way. When the human element is there it makes me feel as if the "monster" knows what it is doing is wrong, yet it chooses to kill anyway.

Thumb resize.

I work in video games and Silent Hill is a favorite of mine because the monsters were truly creepy. That odd combination of sexual, gory and the way many of the moved with an unnatural motion really created a sense of dread. Great games and the first Silent Hill movie was a good attempt to capture that. It fell flat in some ways but Pyramid Head and the Nurses translated well in the movie.

Isn't that right ::big grin:: I'm in the same boat. But I would like to see more Monsters. Everything is either zombies (which I love) but it get's tired. Or the Supernatural.

I love Pyramid Head. I wish he had more of a part in Silent Hill. Probably my favorite monster. I have included him in a lot of my artwork.

Has anyone seen The Millennium Bug (2011)? It's another no CGI movie that tries to recreate the campy (albeit classic) practical effects used in the old monster movies. The movie itself, of course, it completely outrageous and over the top, but if you watch it for monster alone, it's a fun film.

neilold 04-28-2014 02:32 PM

I like the monster in the film the lake, simply because it isn't cgi, and it looks like some mad plastic angler fish!!

Elijah23256 05-14-2014 09:21 AM

I believe They should go back to the original monster flims such as Dracula, Frankenstein, the mummy. Monsters of that sort because they were memorable, exciting and thrilling

I second this.
People in suits and fake blood. So much better than CGI.

Damn Heathen 08-26-2014 06:00 AM

It would be impossible for filmdom to fully satisfy my monster craving. The monster in the recent ANIMAL was pretty cool.

Universal is doing just that by creating a new "crossover universe" for all the classic monsters. The upcoming Dracula Untold is NOT part of this universe.

horcrux2007 08-26-2014 06:10 AM

I thought this thread was about a "Monsters" sequel :P

He is my favorite character in Silent Hill and it would be awesome to see a movie focused on him.

I like both types of monsters (if they are represented correctly). I found Dr. Satan (House of 1,000 Corpses) to be an extreme "monster" but I thought the creature in Hypothermia was a joke. You have to make a monster believable or it just appears cheesy; I don't do "silly" monster movies.

The last sentence in your quote is exactly how I feel too.

starbaseone 09-01-2014 08:07 PM

I agree. We need more monsters, and more supernatural characters (Jason, cannot be killed). More giant monsters would be good, too. We did get Godzilla in 2014, but that's about it.

I still think Creature from the Black Lagoon is my favorite monster movie. We need more of those type. Creatures that lurk... come from the swamps, etc.

Speaking of swamps, I'm surprised Venom didn't become a franchise.

RadioactiveCinemaCult 09-07-2014 11:55 PM

Monsters.

Humans in monster suits. I really miss that kind of fun. Really cliche to say something like that, but sometimes a mediocre computer effect, sucks life out of a creation. Well it is understatement, if the effect would be too much expensive or even impossible to produce. But hey, Japanese have been doing the impossible for over 50 years?

(Godzilla Vs. Biollante - ゴジラvsビオランテ (1989))

So... Yeah?

But, anyway. I really haven't seen "recent" monster flick. (One was The Frankenstein Theory (2013) and Big Ass Spider! (2013), but those weren't so original. Oh, I almost forgot Godzilla (2014). MUTO's were not that original in design aspect too. They looked like Cloverfield-monsters.
Then there are The Asylum knock-offs. Sharknando (2013) and the sequel.
And zombies. They are everywhere, have been couple of years active by now.
Aliens and extraterrestrial seem to belong into big budget Hollywood-blockbusters.
Sigh. Still waiting the great slasher-killer smash up, from 80's-90's. That day will never come... (Except TerrorDrome.)
