When the villagers would search for bodies they would always come back empty handed. Another thing that people noticed was that they never saw one animal in Normans Woods, they never heard any birds singing. It was quiet as a tomb.
But there was one villager who knew a little more about "Norman Woods" than she was letting on.
Martha Stevenson. A very strange woman, always kept to her self, never talked to anyone. Many people thought she was an odd one.
Her land bordered the "Woods". Her house was well-kept...with an almost "english cottage" appearance to it.
When I learned about this woman, I decided I would pay her a visit. When I reached her front door I began to knock.
I'm not a patient person and it seemed like forever before she finally came to the door. I was taken back by her looks; she reminded me of a cross between Betty Davis and Kathy Bates. I felt like I could be looking at a witch, is it possible?
If she was a witch, I felt no fear. This would not be my first encounter with one.
I decided that I would be the first to break the ice. " Good morning my name is Timmothy Chaplin and you are?"
" Iza Redding". she replied in an angered tone. " What do you want?" |
Well I've learned there's more than one way to skin a donkey. I decided to turn on the Chaplin charm (legendary, if I'm honest). "My kingdom for a drink of water, dear lady!" I chirped winningly.
She did not reply. I thought that she would invite me in instead she closed the door and did not reopen it.
Interesting...unexpected..but interesting none the less. I made my way to leave when a voice coming from the upper window stopped me.
I looked up at the window and saw an old man. He kept on saying " come back....... Come baaaaccccckkkkk."
I motioned for him to be quiet and snuck around to the back of the house. I just had time to duck behind a woodpile as the back door opened!
It was Iza. She was carrying a burlap bag. She was heading for Normans woods.
I decided, for the while, the old man in the house would be safe..if he was indeed even in any danger. I held back a minute and then followed her.
We went deep into the woods. We finally came to an enormous. Amazed by this enormous tree I realized that I lost sight of liza.
I was very drawn to the tree, it was pulling me closer to it. I began to feel very light one my feet, as though I was floating in mid-air.
The sky was turning black with storm clouds. Voices were coming from everywhere "Come come, come and see the wonders of the forest come....... come". The churning storm clouds began to mix with wind, rain, lightning then into a raging cyclone. I managed to see the tree in the darkness next to it was standing the old man I saw from the street. Then every thing went black. I woke up the next morning and saw....
...scorched earth surrounding me in a large circle. The enormous tree was..gone! My hands were trembling and I felt very unsettled indeed!
I was unsure what to do or if I should even move at the moment. Suddenly, I heard a woman's voice.
I turned my head as she stepped toward me. She was unlike anything I had seen before. Her skin was coppery brown and she stood over 7 feet tall but as thin boned as a small child. She had no eyes..only openings..and no hair on her head.
She was beautiful in a strange way. She reached out her thin arms, beckoning me to come to her. The air around her seemed to shimmer and ripple.
I wasn't afraid..far from it to be honest. The rippling around her intensified and I noticed small appendages round her torso that appeared to hold pulsing organs..a heart or lungs possibly? As I started towards her my foot struck a protrusion from the scorched earth. I looked down to see the bloody half of a human face!
I stalled for a moment, looking closer at the mangled thing. Then horror surged through my body. The destroyed thing that used to be a face, was my own staring blankly up at me. My hands shot straight to my face.
They clamped reassuringly on my face and I didn't want to let go. I felt weak with relief but peered through my fingers at the horror that lay at my feet. Then the earth opened up to swallow the face and pulled me along with it.
I scratched and clawed at the ground trying to keep myself above the earth. The woman reached out for me as if she were trying to help.
In the spiralling sand I was twisted to and fro, all the while trying to avoid the dead mirror face. Everything came to a standstill and the woman made to grasp at me but all I could do was...
fall. |
I felt the earth close in around me and watched as the last speck of light faded away. Sinking through the dirt I could feel the roots of trees scraping along my arms and legs like pointy fingertips.
I tried to free myself. I began screaming at the top of my lungs! No one could hear me.
Then suddenly, just as I thought I was going to suffocate in the earth, I spilled out falling from the ceiling of a huge room. I must have fallen thirty feet into a pile of soft dirt. I looked around, shocked and unsure of where I was.
My mind was reeling as I looked around at what appeared to be a deep cellar. Questions pounded my weary brain. My half-face, the woman creature up above..was all this something to do with the secret of Norman Woods?
I could barely see up to the ceiling I had just fallen through and I wasn't sure but I thought I could see the roots of trees twisting and intertwining like snakes on the ceiling. I stood slowly dusting myself off and looking around taking in my surroundings.
My very bones felt wretched and I now could imagine how a newborn felt being squeezed into the world. But what world had I been born into? I surmised that somehow I was underneath that mammoth tree I had followed Liza to.
It was pitch black and I slowly felt my way around the room, trying not to trip over something and hoping I wasn't going to run into the headless horseman from Sleepy Hollow.
I began to see a small glow ahead of me. I stopped, I started to hear a moan. I began to turn back when I heard another sound.
It was music! And what I thought was a moan, was gentle singing. It was coming from the area of the small glow.
I was drawn toward the direction from where the music was coming from. I felt tired.
I could feel myself walking towards the glow, yet, I felt like something was calling me to the glow. Was I being hypnotized?
