Achieving immortality?

Sup bros? What are your thoughts on possibilities for immortality? Can it be realized, scientifically or mystically?

Exhibit A: Turritopsis Nutricula AKA the "Immortal Jellyfish." When in stress or injured it can reverse its current age to a younger age and start aging again.

Also: lobsters and turtles. Do we have any proof they ever die of old age, or are they all just caught and run over and made into lobster bisque and shit?

There would be a lot of weird things like would we live forever but continue to age? Would my grandchildren someday catch up to me? Would we have any room for new humans? How long would we have to work etc. What need would there be for time...

MichaelMyers 03-15-2015 05:20 PM

Great questions, Bloofer. I would have so much fun using my prod to keep my flock of descendants in line.

There are living entities that are immortal, which means that very soon through medicine and science we (or the rich at least) may be able to become immortal.

I don't see immortality coming in the form of tweaks to your current system. A Dr. In Sweden claims to be 7-10 years from successfully transplanting a human head. With that, you could easily purchase a younger body and start the aging process over. Eventually we will be able to transplant our heads onto a mechanical body effectively stopping the aging process.

But that head would still be older than the young body and aging. That would just look fucked up.

Your exterior ages because your interior ages. I would be willing to bet that if you had a younger body, you may stop aging or possibly age in reverse a bit.

A couple other possibilities. Vampire therapy, this says that if you cycle your blood out and younger blood in through a dialysis system, you can effectively age in reverse. This is actually a things and its catching on.

They also can download your consciousness into a computer now. It's only been done once so far, but they can take your mind and put it into a computer, technically making your consciousness live forever.

Also, where would the younger body be coming from? Who would we be killing? Sounds like a horror film!

Jake.Ashworth 03-16-2015 03:17 AM

Doesn't it! I see wealthy people farming young men and women with perfect bodies. One day your best friend disappears and you go looking for him just to find a huge cover up and a group of super wealthy who are genetically creating superior physical bodies in order to use them when they need them.

Indians speak of Immortals ... people who, every 50 years or so, undergo an extreme Ayurvedic rejuvenation procedure, shed their skin/hair, grow new organ tissue, etc.

Jake you are full of useful information. I'm going to beat the bushes for a vampire dialysis clinic here in the states. I assume it's about asking the right questions to the right people.

I think people have achieved this Jake. I think they walk among us. An immortal would not "volunteer" for a "study," especially one run thru the medical industrial complex, to prove anything. One who has acquired it through especially occult practices would not walk about publicly boasting about it.

I will never seek for immortality. Death is welcome in my home. If death comes knocking at my door I will let him in.

You've been around here awhile, Angra....a good while....and never seem to age. You appear mighty nervous.

MichaelMyers 03-16-2015 10:48 AM

Just got back from the health store. I figure I must maintain optimal health until science advances (or secrets are leaked). I bought some Resveratrol, Colloidal Gold, Spirilina, Fish Oil, L-Theanine to take along with my regular multivitamin. Also thinking about tweaking my diet. I have followed paleo plan for many years but my vegan friends say that bacteria and cancers thrive on the putrified meat in our stomachs. Always sounded bogus to me but I dunno.

A different thread and I won't say who, but: I think I have known several members here before, somehow.

Jake.Ashworth 03-16-2015 11:14 AM

Don't listen to your vegan friends. Paleo is the way to go. Stay the course! Our bodies where designed to operate a very specific way and meat is 100% a huge part of that. The bacteria in your stomach is needed to keep your system healthy. I beg of you, don't go vegan, its not how you where designed.

Jake.Ashworth 03-16-2015 11:15 AM

Yes they seem to cut a weak and sickly looking figure anyway. Definitely wouldn't go wendigo-hunting with them. ::big grin::

Jake.Ashworth 03-16-2015 11:30 AM

Hell no! For more than one reason, you would be the most tasty looking there.

Back on topic, I don't think we will be allowed to reach immortality. As much as there are all of these things popping up that makes it possible, I don't think whatever you believe in, God, Nature, Allah, Flying Spaghetti Monster, will allow us to get that far. As far as I am concerned, we are only allotted so much time to make a mark on the world, if you cant in your time then you wasted it.

Sweetie, you are too young to welcome death. Immortality..no...but you're good for another wonderful 70 years I hope. At 57, I hope for another 25 or so.

Michael, I am not a vegan by any stretch but I often feel we can "eat" an animal's sickness or cancer.

What does that even mean, Michael: "it can reverse its current age to a younger age and start aging again"?

Whoever reported, or published, this research, how is age being defined & determined, and how is "reverse its current age to a younger age" being defined & determined?

If that just means an acceleration in free radical elimination, or a slowing in replacement of cells, I most decidedly would not define that as "reversing its current age".

Also if injured jelly fish... live longer, or regains the ability to mate again (or however they are defining 'younger age'), I wouldn't call that "reversing to a younger age".

My current understanding is aging is in the genes, and not in wear-and-tear... which seems obvious now that we know humans replace every cell in the body every seven years, and the fact that life spans among different species of similar sizes and forms have drastically different lifespans. It's never been announced an aging gene has been found, let along understood, so I highly doubt actual reverse aging can be determined in jellyfish.

Hi Jake! Can you cite (give a link) to that source?

I would be willing to bet $1000 a human consciousness has not been downloaded to a computer.

The technical functioning of consciousness in the brain is not yet understood (from the lastest TED Talks, & other, research). So such a claim sounds ridiculous. There are approximately 100 billion neurons in a human brain. Each neuron has up to 10,000 synapses (connecting lines) to other neurons. Which means there's as many as 1,000 trillion synaptic connections. Ironically, that being said, computer harddrive space and processing speed aren't the issue -- if one were able to construct a computer, and pseudo-duplicate an individual's brain structure, how would one get it to initiate its own motion (thoughts consciousness)?

In regards to "consciousness", I guess that's dependent on just how loosely someone wants to define 'consciousness'. If any engineer had the nuts to announce such a claim (a human consciousness has been downloaded to a computer), I'd love to see how they define it. It might not be what we call consciousness.

The jellyfish reverts to its formal stage and starts the aging process anew. I suppose it is not *invincible*---one could stomp on it and it would certainly die---but barring these accidents the jellyfish could live forever. It has a healing power ala Wolverine.

Ill give you a couple of positions, the below link is to the 2045 Initiative. It is run by a Neuroscientist who says that by 2020 he will have finished a full body robot completely controlled by BCI (Brain-Computer Interface). Then by 2025 the group will have created a, they call it an Avatar, that can receive a human brain and in doing so retain all of that person memories and his consciousness effectively making that person immortal, with proper maintenance. Then by 2035 an Avatar with a man maid brain that they will download your brain functions to. The 2045 part of the initiative is to remove the physical Avatar and have the brain stored and an holographic Avatar created.

http://2045.com/

Then there is Bina48, Ill let you read the article but when it come down to it, they continuously upload what they call mind files to the robot and it is able to remember Bina's life, it is able to use her vocabulary, it is able to express emotions. It is the first step to being a fully functional robotic version of the real Bina. The end step this company wants is to be able to upload all of a persons "Mind Files" into a database and have you be able to interact with that person via your smart phone. They are not wanting to make robots that will eventually take over the earth but make on screen Avatars that will be able to continue growing and learning and helping us advance.

Heavy stuff y'all...My belief is that sorta thing would take us away from our true human self.

Jake.Ashworth 03-17-2015 06:10 AM

I agree, I fear that if we couldn't see a human standing before us it would be to easy to lose compassion. But at the same time, we could just program out the urge to kill or murder and eventually eliminate it. My fear is that reproducing would cease and everyone would just continue living as they are. It would also be easy for the government to deem who gets to live forever and who doesn't. Eventually it would be a perfect race of robots, with our memories but everything that makes us, us would cease. Its scary if you think about it. Its also scary that with how fast the world of science is developing we could just be 50 years from this sort of thing. We may all live to see robots take over the world.

A very short step from where we are today indeed!

That would be the worst case scenario. But I think it would be kind of cool to be Data or T-1000. Robocop was a badass too. Beats being compost.

Jake.Ashworth 03-17-2015 07:01 AM

It may, but what if the robot part of you takes over and you just have to be there for the ride? It would be like being a vegetable, except with no end in site.

Well we are practically immortal already, are body isnt but our soul is our bodies are but a shell.

I had a dream once that I was in med evil time and that the city I was living in was under attack. I was running through the streets looking for someone and I looked up to see a tower falling over me.

The only thing that I cant remember from this dream was the person that I was looking for.
