I am from the Uk and in 1984 The government, in their wisdom, devided to ban various horros and another assorted oddites (video nasties as they came to be known). Did this hasppen in the US or was it just a Uk phenomenon? It was actually a sort of good thing. Because it led to the joy of trying to track down copies of these movies in obscure flea markets and video shops. The excitement of finding something 'taboo' made the whole experience a buzz. The films themselves were secondary to this (evil dead, driller killer, zombie holocaust etc). Also i remeber the art on the video box covers were often more interesting and better than the actual fim itself. Anyway, i'm not sure if your country does this sort of thing, (isn't it something to do with the constitution?) Also the bbfc in recent years, briefly, tired to ban the human centipede 2, this reminded of the golden days of the eighties. Of course, the majority of these films have since being released over here in unedited, or cut versions.

I takes a lot to get a movie banned over here. There are still a lot that are hard to find, but its mostly because of the scarcity of production. All of that said, everything can be found online...

The difference is that all films releases (except in private clubs) in the UK have to be submitted to the BBFC. In AMerica submitting to your film to MPAA is voluntary. They can't 'ban' films but they can give it an X cert which means it will not play at most theatres and certain stores won't stock the disk etc.

The UK also had a big back lash to Horror films after the James Bulger Murder - they tried to piggy back an new bill that so much more extreme that the 1984 VRA. Luckily it was never passed.

Also the Video Nasties thing was nothing to do with the BBFC - it was the DPP who leading the witch hunt.

thanks ferox. Either way they were spoilsports, boo, hiss, boo! i imagine like me from your threadname, and love of exploitation, that you are also a fan of many of the films to make the list. I remeber some of the inclusions like evilspeak werre frankly odd, it seems they just got caught in the dragnet rather than were properly judged for their content.

As least Evil Speak was gorey - I have no idea at all why Forest of Fear was on it. Axe was another very tame one.

I always feel bad for the distributor of Nightmares in a Damaged Brain who did 6 months for distributing an old ready cut print on VHS.

and it was pretty rubbish to. forest of fear was awful, if memory serves me. I always get it mixed up with the rock band in the woods one, which is equally bad if not worse, assuming i'm not talking about the same movie.it may have being one of the persistently alerting 'don't go' movies. Which are your favourites from the era (including exploitation) ferox?

There's a video series on Youtube reviewing a bunch of video nasties if you're interested. It's on a channel called Horrible Reviews. He's also done a 15 part series about the most disturbing movies ever.

I love the Ilsa movies, I love to shout lewd and comic comments at the screen when I watch it. That's part of the fun for exploitation movie, have you seen I drink your blood? I have so much fun every time I watch it! Fight for your life is another great one to boo/cheer along to!

Ilsa never got a UK release - I Drink your Blood did and seemed to be ignored during the nasties era. Can't remember if it is uncut - excellent film.

Funny seeing William Sanderson in Fight for your life - he has since got semi famous since Bladerunner, Deadwood and True Blood.

i never saw the illsa films except the first one, which i found for sale in a dodgy vhs tape in some equallly diisreputable shop. I saw the rest of them once the net came along, although the first is the best by some way in my opinion. Expose, from what i remember, isnt that nasty. Its more a story of a man writing a book and the women problems he has. It isn't that great, either, i found it to be dull and slow. Mind you i tend to favour the 'nastier' nasties anyway, if you get what i mean.

I often wonder how much of fight for your life would be uncut if it was released today. I think in these pc times it would be heavily cut, certainly in my whiny pc country (the UK). I remeber hearing about how racist it was before i first watched it, and then when i did i didn't think it had as much racism and brutality in it as i thought it would have done.
