Comfort in Horror Movies

It may not make sense, but some people with anxiety disorders–myself included—love nothing more than calming down with a terrifying film. I talked to researchers to find out why. I guess my amygdala is desensitized to horror movies. I rarely jump from jump scares and never feel dread or apprehension watching horror movies. |
Good article. Makes a lot of sense. I have pretty bad anxiety and horror movies always seem to settle me. Never really thought about it though.

Is it strange that I find a lot of 80's horror films cozy?

I find The Thing and Alien to be good chillout horror. |

The Thing From Another Planet, from 1951, may have been the first Horror movie I ever saw, and it's been a favorite ever since. I sometimes use it in the same way I would music. I'll put it on as background atmosphere while I do chores or write or whatever. Definitely a comfort movie for me. I love Carpenters version but it's a little too intense and dynamic to really help me chill. I get too into it! |
