DVD Rot.
no it's not the title for a new gore film,
after seeing Vamps new thread asking for help with a scene in Silence of The lambs, I thought I'd check out the film, to see what he's talking about. anyway, chucked the disk in my dvd rom, and it starts clicking, scene selection wont load and dvd software freezes up. I closed it down and ejected the disk. the 1st disk is well and truly fucked now, it's all cracked from the centre outwards. I checked the 2nd disk and there's no cracks, but the surface has lost it's shine and it's completely sticky to the touch. The 1st disk is also sticky. I'm assuming this is disk rot, that I've read about, where the glue sticking the layers together 'rots' the disk. The version of Silence of The Lambs is the 2 disk Special Edition version (see below), in the cardboard sleve, produced by MGM. Not sure of the date it was made because I bought it a long time after the film was released. Maybe if any of you guys have this version, would check to see if yours is ok. |
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
|
tell me about it :(
I cant remember where I bought it aswell, may email mgm and see what they say, thats if they bother to reply. |

Damn Shanks that sux dude, can't say I've ever had a problem with any of my dvd's like that....
|
yeah.
would be a good idea for all the members here with the faulty disks to post here, to get an idea of numbers. Unless the problems restricted to UK released versions of the Disk. |

just been checking a few other disks, all's well so far. Checked a few other MGM disks, they look ok. |
Wow. I have never heard of DVD rot before ... and, fortunately, this has not yet happened to me. I know that at the Blockbuster my wife manages, she has a bottle of some sort of DVD restoration fluid, which does things like eliminate small scratches and basically resurface the disk. Unless the damage is severe, which it sounds like ShankS disc is totally fucked.
I have had some bad experiences with DVD players, though. My wife would bring home a brand new DVD, not even released to the public yet, and we would put it in one of our DVD players and it would begin to freeze up halfway through the film. This player does it with practically every DVD we have, now. It sucks ... but ... Players can always be replaced easily. It's hard to replace a collection that has fallen victim to rot. |

Have you tried cleaning it with something? Windex, maybe?

keep it, it might be worth something some day, but then again, they said that about those damn beanie babys....never again

I've read about it and there was something on the tv a while ago. when the disk spins in the player, the high velocity cracks the outer surface up, because the glue has weakened it, hence an unplayabe disk. |

I take extra special care of all my DVDs. So none of them have rot... yet. Thank God for that. But the reason I do this is mainly because I have herd of such a thing happening to DVD's before. And now that I see proof that it does happen, you better believe I'm going to be treating my DVDs like children. Oh, wait, that would kill the DVD. Well, I'll treat them better then how I treat others. And trust me, thats a good thing. But I check the movies once a month to make sure that they don't have 'rot'. And right now, although it hasn't been a month, I'm checking Silence of the Lambs. Well, it's working fine. Thank God. But even if it wasn't, I always have it on VSH.

I dont think it's the conditions you keep them in or the way you treat them, that causes the rot, it's the faulty manufacturing process, dodgy glue, or can be the ink thats printed on the top side of the disk that reacts with the disk itself.
no mater how well you look after your disks, if they're gona rot, they're gona rot:( I've read, things have improved though with the manufacturing now, tends to be old disks that have trouble. |
