Stanley Kubrick's Shining?? It is a provocation, is not it?

avenger00soul 10-30-2003 03:10 PM

Loved the movie, hated the mini.

Original is classis. Jack Nicholson was great. Never saw the remake though.

You don't want to. It's an abomination.

Heeheehee . . . we finally disagree on something, Avenger! I think this is a first, isn't it? :)

That's cool, man. I respect your opinion, but I *loved* the miniseries remake. I think just as much as Kubrick's original, even. Why? Because it was a much more faithful adaptation of Stephen King's novel THE SHINING. I thought Steven Weber did a fantastic job as a very *slowly* deteriorating Jack Torrance, first and foremost. I'm not saying it was flawless, of course -- the Dick Halloran actor was its weakest point, of course (that guy couldn't hold a candle to Catman Strothers!) and the little boy wasn't too great -- but I still loved it. I believe it captured the tragedy in King's original novel so much better than Kubrick's version, though I certainly wouldn't go so far as to say it was *better* . . . .

I just like 'em equally.

Been meaning to pick it up on DVD, just haven't got the chance yet . . . .

It had to happen sooner or later. I know it's supposed to be a more faithful adaptation, but I never read the book so that doesn't bother me. As far as performances, no one holds a candle to...ahem ~Scatman Crothers~ But, I hated the little boy. He got on my damn nerves and I actually wanted Weber to hit him with that mallot (I equally hate Shelley Duvall in the original though).

I liked both the mini-series and the movie:)

Freddy, would you mind me asking how old you are? I saw the movie when I was pretty young and thought it was lame, but now I think it's cool. I think "The Shining" is one of the movies you're able to comprehend better when you get older, IMO.
