given that I'm not sure what you'd qualify as an independent movie, I'll just list a few:

2) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

An independent film is a film outside of hollywood....

elephant was a crazy indie film.

I would have to say that Halloween was one of the most solid Indie Horror films ever made. As a kid I saw no difference between it and any major film as far as its production values, storytelling ability, etc.

NIght of the Living Dead, while a little campy, was VERY ambitious and comes in a close second for me.
