How do you organise your collection?

I'm having a re-organising session with my DVD collection. It's starting to outgrow it's storage cabinet so I'm ebaying some titles and replacing some collections with boxsets, etc.

So I was wondering, how do you organise your collections? Are they sorted by name, studio or director? Are they sorted under category such as zombie, vampire, etc. Do they have seperate sections for horror, scifi, etc? Or are they just thrown on the shelves haphazard?

Currently I keep my horror/scifi seperate from my drama and foreign language section. My top shelf is for prominent directors, such as argento, fulci, bava, rollins, romero, shyamalan (*duck*), etc. My next shelf will be for films I group together for other reasons, such as prominent studios (e.g. classic hammer, universal and amicus). Then the rest of my horror/scifi is sorted alphabetically.

I used to keep my horror and scifi seperate, but it gets a tad difficult to categorise certain films, so I gave up with that.

Mine are put into genres and then alphabitized.

At the moment, most of my DVDs are stored away, but still ave a few on some shelves all mixed up. In about a month I'll be moving to a new house and I'll have enough space to dedicate a room just for storing DVDs.

I've not decided on the order I'm going to display them, but will probably have to mix and match a few. Such as my Japanese Ultimate editions, Tartan Asia collection and I've got quite a few Korean & worldwide limited editions that I'll probably keep together.

The rest of my regular DVDs, I'll probably put them into categories.

Well, I initially tried to seperate them by genre when I moved in to my house last year, but since then they've gotten shuffled a bit and new ones I add just get put where there is room, so at the moment there's no organization to my collecton. Scream is sandwiched in between Star Wars and Caddyshack.

seperated by meduim (beta/vhs/laserdisc/dvd) and then by genre.

but i ran out of room for everything so now the genres are getting blended ..
I give up...

Someone seems to have a lot of time on their hands!

Don't bother organizing my films - whatever I pick up, I watch.
Now, as for books ......
