War movies

A topic which has been talked about in sporadic bursts and moments. Its good to have its own thread.

So...do you like em?

I have a pretty good list of movies which I actually loved - Platoon, The Longest Day, Where Eagles Dare, The Guns of Navarone, Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Das Boot, A Bridge Too Far, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Great Escape, etc.

Most of you know I rank Platoon very highly, and it is in my all-time Top 10 Favs. I felt really close to Charlie Sheen's character, and Tom Berenger as Barnes & Willem Dafoe as Elias really carry the movie from beginning to end on their very powerful characterisations. A more hard-hitting and raw portrayal of the Nam was never done. Hats off to Oliver Stone.

So, which ones have you watched and really liked? And, would you like to recommend any of those?

Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket are my favorites.

Not really sure why this is in the ' Modern Horror Movies' section but yeah i'm a big film fan and some of those that i love are war films. so ones i really like (for the weirdest reason):

All Quiet on the Eastern Front: This really set the bar for the horro fil - i really cannot imagine the impact it had on audiences in the 30's. It fucking horrible and hard hitting - the scene with the german soldier spending the night in the fox hole with the guy he killed is harrowing. I love Saving Private Ryan but watch this first and reassess.

Sands of Iwo Jimo: Ok I always though this as a macho pro america flick from my chilhood memories but it far surpasses this. Great film - great depiction of the futility of war and it has judo in it too..

The Eagle has Landed: Ok Donald Suderland as the Irish guy - thats it and i love it..

Where Eagles Dare: Another childhood fave. Clint steals the show to a very entertaining Richard Buton.

I like a lot of the films mentioned but I didn't see anybody talk about Tae Guk Gi (sp?) which I rank very highly among war films.

I think Apocalypse Now is as powerful as a movie comes. Sheer, gripping suspense adventure, and horrifying war sequences. I love it.

I also like Platton, Patton, Full Metal Jacket, The Deer Hunter...

The Great Escape is a blast.
