I'm sure this has happened to you...
 

Well, I decided to watch the experimental horror movie "Begotten" and I hated it, I wanted to say it is the worst movie I have ever seen (in my opinion of course). Now I went to IMDB (a site I don't really care for) to see what rating it got, which was a fairly mixed review. Then I decided to look at comments on it, and there was one person who also hated it (but seemed a bit unreasonably harsh about it), but then everyone started called him uncultured and told him "to go back to his Michael Bay movies". Now to me this kind of seems like they were trying to say that people who don't like this movie were just uncultured hicks and cinematic simpletons, which I felt was kind of unfair.

Either way, my question is, ever hated (or loved) a movie and a bunch of people started insulting you for it or thought you were just uncultured?

Yeah, some pieve of shit film called "the stuff". People didn't have a go too much at me or anything but certainly a lot seem to disagree.

Absolutely. Two that immediately spring to mind are Eraserhead and Don't Look Now. I couldn't stand either of them, and was told I just "Didn't Get It".
I like a broad range of movies from the critically acclaimed to pure schlock, so I understand the concept of having some deep-lying message in a film, or appreciating a film for pure atmosphere, but more often than not, it just isn't enough.

Mulholland Drive.....I find it more annoying and boring than anything. But apparently, since I didn't like it, I just didn't understand it. And I am, in general, too stupid to watch movies.....;)

Never really understood why some people get so worked up when other people have opinions that differ from their own. So offended by the very idea that they actually have to take the time to respond just to be insulting. IMDB is full of that kind of thing. I never post there. I do occasionally read some of the arguments that result, which are often hilarious.

I hate Mulholland Drive. It's simplistic, self-indulgent and overly transparent. Gee, David Lynch, I thought Hollywood was awesome for everybody. Wow. You showed them. Also, Naomi Watts is like a starved, autistic Nicole Kidman. Hate her. I was told I didn't get Mulholland Drive. That's funny, because I get Eraserhead, I get the Holy Mountain, I get Naked Lunch (the book), I get MPD Psycho, I get James Joyce's Ulysses. I guess David Lynch is smarter and more experimental than JAMES FUCKING JOYCE. Also, I hate Stanley Kubrick. I think his movies are oppressive, tyrannical, selfish and disrespectful to source material. I also think some of them are quite dull. I get a lot of shit for that. Then I ask if they've read the books and almost invariably, they have not. I too am not crazy about Don't Look Now. I find it icy and slow.

See, I actually LIKE Mulholland Drive... But I understand why people don't... And I don't consider them "uncultured" or anything, because I agree with Doc except for bashing Naomi Watts - I thought she was brilliant...

But I feel that way about Eraserhead, honestly... I DO "get" the movie, but I find it self-indulgent art house crap. I feel similarly to Tetsuo, though I have ridiculous amount of respect for that movie in terms of how incredibly risque it was.

Also - I've been mocked for saying that Pan's Labyrinth was overrated. There. I've said it AGAIN. I thought it had stunning visuals, but a story that couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a dark fantasy or a historical fiction piece. Devil's Backbone was brilliance, but Pan's Labryinth was dark and pretty with a weak story.

Doc - People give you crap for hating Kubrik? Honestly, I LOVE him, but, again, I can see the hatred... HE IS SO FUCKING BORING SOMETIMES and SELF INDULGENT. For reelz. I'm a fan, but at least I can admit that.

Same thing with Miike. LOOOOOOOOOOVE him, think he's brilliant, but see his flaws.

Also - I found Ulysses unreadable. Oh, I "GET" it, but TALK about self-indulgence... Then again, I'm a huge Sound and the Fury fan, so that, to me, makes me feel like a hypocryte (I think that the two narratives have a LOT in common).

Other overrated books that I "GET" but just found BLEAH -

And back to the original subject of this post, which is Begotton... Honestly, the reason why I HAVEN'T seen is is that I think I'll probably hate it. It looks like art house crap to me, and I generally am not a fan.


Sadly, I used to be that kind of person, "Oh, you didn't LIKE it, well, that just means you didn't GET it, you CRETIN." I was angry and self-righteous and felt like an outcast with my peers (because of my SOPHISTICATED SENSIBILITIES OF COURSE) and I OWNED it - That just meant that I was intellectually SUPERIOR and I HAD TO BE RIGHT...

But then I realized that I was alienating a LOT of people by being a movie/music/pop culture snob and decided that it was OK if people didn't LIKE the things that I did. AND it was OK if people LIKED the things that I DIDN'T (although for the life of me I still maintain that people only pretent to "like" Vanilla Sky because it makes them feel SMRTR - SEE?! There's that snob coming out AGAIN!!).

Anyway. Those snobby people really get to me because in a way, I see angry-teenage-Chrono in them and it freaks me out.




Also: I do not care for Hershel Gordon Lewis. And that's considered heresy around these here parts... But COME ON! His movies are UNWATCHABLE.

AND I'm not a fan of Giallo cinema. I've tried to reach out to people here to tell me why they like it (sparking unnecessary hatred from BUB THAT DICK), and ultimately I just don't get the appeal. I didn't really like Suspira OR Tenebre. I couldn't get through Don't Torture a Duckling. I thought House by the Cemetery was awful. And I REALLY didn't care for the updated Cemetery Man. It's all like Hitchcock with flashy colors and lots of NOISE. Not my bag.

I don't believe in acting like people suck because they don't get something. I feel like I should help them understand what there is to gain from it. A lot of people miss out on Ulysses because they look at it from the wrong plane, thinking it's self indulgent because Joyce's references are products of his time and education and because it's a book that's more about what happens to the book than to the people in it, which makes it different from the Sound and the Fury's stream of consciousness which is about intimacy. It's genuinely hard to grasp because we're trained to read a certain way and plot works a certain way. But, it's a book that's more a product of the realm of ideas and spirituality than our own. Nothing happens. And the nothing that's happening is told in a way that's confusing and protean. But it changes because life and the world around us go on and do bigger things even when we feel like we're doing nothing and even something as simple as going to a funeral or looking at newborn babies makes us a part of something huge and relevant. When he looks at babies, you see language growing up, when he gets confused, the book gets more confusing. I can see why you don't like most H.G Lewis movies too but you should see The Gore Gore Girls if you haven't and if you can dig it, you'll see more of what he's doing and why people can identify. As for Gialli, a lot of them are very slow, not coherent and don't pay off with action. You might want to try Opera or Bava's enjoyable, fun and human La Ragazza Che Sapeva Troppo.

I have been told that I just don't understand Japanese horror because I didn't really love Noroi: The Curse. Fetuses. Big deal.:rolleyes:

Closest experiance I have had with this would be with Watchmen. I found the film a real snooze fest. The bulk of the characters I thought were really lame and flat. I thought half of what was going on was pointless filler and couldn't get my head round half the characters. I thought half the actors were second rate too. I thought some of it was nicely done and thought some of the lesser characters were cool, but there was alot of teenage angst crap dressed up in a hard hitting movie. I have coped alot of flack from friends who really dig it though. I can't even acknowledge that I haven't read the comic without getting reminded that its a graphic novel, not a comic...

People have different tastes and its all mostly subjective anyway. I figure if there's an audiance for it then fair enough, it must be doing its job. That doesn't always mean everyone has to enjoy it though.
