James Wan signing off horror films for good?

'Insidious 2' and 'Conjuring' Director James Wan Says He's Done With Horror

Quote:

"I'm going to go on record and say I am finished with the horror genre. Conjuring and Insidious 2 are my two last scary movies.

Hollywood puts you in a box. If you do a successful comedy, then you're know as The Comedy Guy. If you do a successful car chase movie, then you become that guy. So I'm a student of cinema, so I just want to make sure I get the chance to make other kinds of films."
Change will arrive in the now-filming Fast & Furious 7 with Wan at the helm.

Well that sucks. Hes the only one making good horror anymore.

CaraBloodyCara 09-17-2013 09:52 AM

Yeah, because the Fast & Furious movies really need to continue...

*sigh*

Good for him. He's not going to be boxed in. He can always do a horror movie again if he's inspired to do so, and he'll likely be more able to have creative control.

Most investors want to try to guarantee a return by sticking to a formula. That's what drives many writer/directors mad; and why we see the same thing over and over.

For a filmmaker, I think it'd be more reasonable or mature for him to say "I'll take a break from horror & try some other stuffs for a while" instead of "I am finished with the horror genre"! It's bit dramatic. As a filmmaker, he can do whatever he wants & challenge his talents or experiment in other genre flavors; as an ardent movie lover I appreciate that idea but he should also continue to do what he does best and the base where he got so much success and for that I think he may going to face some little bit tough time from the studios as they will mostly like to see him for horror movies as well.

I'd like to see him experimenting in other sub-genres of Horror, particularly I wish he would go for a psychological horror film in future. And thus it'd be quite acceptable & I won't get such surprise to hear if he said..."Yeah, I'm done with Haunted house flicks."

My sentiments. I think that if you are going to contribute to a genre, why not horror- at least its more complicated than action- action is horror's evil twin that's always making it look bad. </3 Wan may come back if the an idea strikes- artists don't just ignore inspiration. Unless he's been cursed and is experiencing supernatural occurrences himself that have driven him from the genre, he will make another horror movie, maybe about those very occurrences- WTF, Wan?! I'm throwing you material here!

That is great news to me. Since, SAW he went down hill. SAW was his best movie. All the others really sucked.

Watched Insidious, and hated it. Watched The Conjuring and hated it. The Conjuring reminded me of watching a horror movie on the television, but instead was on the big screen. It was like all the good stuff was cut out of the movie in The Conjuring. Nothing in that movie scared me or even came close to a jump to scare me.

If James Wan does decide to do another, he better make it better than the SAW to get get any good recognition. I can't believe directors think PG-13 is good horror. It is not true horror. It is a lite version of what horror movies should be.

Sorry, if you don't like me putting PG-13 horror down, but I got real tired of PG-13 horror, when James Wan actually started it. He turned me away from PG-13 horror.

I think it's good for him to try out other genres to see how good of a director he really is.

Hm, he looks to be directing "The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist".

So much for that statement. ::roll eyes::
