Movie sequels you wish didn't exist

Almost every movie series has at least one movie sequel you wish did not exist. Here are some of mine.

The exorcist II - the heretic
Halloween Resurrection
Hellraiser Deader/Hellworld/Revelations
Jason takes Manhattan, Jason goes to hell
Freddy's dead the final nightmare
Scream 3
The Toxic Avenger 3
Alien Resurrection
Zombie 4/5 (although I question the legitimacy of these sequels)
Return of the living dead necropolis/Rave to the grave
Seed of chucky
Halloween 5
Curse of the puppet master
Silent night deadly night 3 (2 was at least fun, I found this one boring)

Scream 4
Freddy's Dead
Jason Goes To Hell
Halloween Resurrection
Every Child's Play after the third
The Leprechaun in The Hood movies
The new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie
Alien 3 and Resurrection
Tremors 3 and 4

Alien 3

Alien [1979] was brilliant & original. I mean, who'd ever seen an alien-horror flick like that before?

Then Aliens [1986] was an incredible sequel - equally brilliant & original. Aliens [1986] had me ramped up for the next installment in the Alien series as much as Empire Strikes Back [1980] did for Star Wars.

But then Alien 3 [1992], not unlike Return of the Jedi [1983], not unlike learning there really was no Santa Clause showed me the magic was gone. ::sad::

Oh, on its own merits, Alien 3 is probably ok as a movie. But it's never shaken the stigma of being the film that violated me with the knowledge that the Alien franchise was forever done being innovative.

When the two prisoners run into each other & fall down frightened in that "You thought I was the alien? Ha ha - I thought you were the alien!" scene ::mad::... oh the cinemanity! (ooo I hope that isn't taken I just thought of it! ::embarrassment::)

Like Yoda with Luke's X-Wing, my hope is that Prometheus [2012] & its remaining installments will elevate the franchise out of the one-note cliche swamp it's sunken into.

You guys didn't enjoy Alien Resurrection even a bit? Alien 3 sucked, but I thought Resurrection was decent. Res had interesting concepts, and interesting story, they just didn't explore those ideas deeply enough.

Wasted sequels I saw would be:
Alien 3
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
The exorcist II - the heretic
King Kong Lives (1986)
Poltergeist II: The Other Side
Jaws 2
Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf

While Alien 3 is a step down from the previous movies, I can not bring myself to hate it. There is too much good about it. First of all, I like the mode of almost total despair. It saturated everything in the movie. I think that was a bold step after its rambunctious predecessor. The visual style is terrific; cinematic but not over-done. I think Resurrection was over-directed, but the visual composition in Alien 3 is dead on for the material. Fincher would go on to fulfill the promise he showed in Alien 3. I loved the film's score. I think Elliot Goldenthal's score is every bit as good as Jerry Goldsmith's and James Horner's classic scores for the previous movies. It's a shame the Alien 3 script could not match the quality of the score.

That brings us to the Alien 3's weakness, the script. It has some serious problems. Considering that they were literally making it up as they went along, as in they were rewriting it during filming, it could have been worse. For those who don't know, the filmed screenplay was a toned down version of Vincent Ward's far out original script, and by toned down I mean more 'down to Earth', not less bloody. Here is an article about it,- bizarre! The producers improvised from characters and sets built for Ward's ideas, and I think this accounts for the movie's lack of ambition. It's a shame, but, to be honest, Ward's ideas were pretty nuts and perhaps not as fitting to the series' tone as what ended up being filmed.

Anyway, for the mess that the screenplay is, it does have some good moments. I liked the opening credit sequence and Newt's funeral sequence. I also liked when Andrews got wasted.

By the way, Vincent Ward's screenplay can be read here. For those who don't know, cyber-punk meastro William Gibson was also commissioned to do a script for Alien 3, his idea were pretty far-out too, but in an entirely different direction than Ward's. Their treatments are almost opposites. Gibson's is not bad though, it can be read here.

Of all the ones mentioned, the only ones I really agree with are:

Exorcist II: The Heretic
Leprechaun: Back 2 Tha Hood

All the others mentioned I enjoy for one reason or another.

Not mentioned yet:

Howling III: The Marsupials
Amityville IV: The Evil Escapes

Howling III's subtitle is "the marsupials"?! That is too funny! Sounds like a comedy.
