I was pretty excited to see this one, and when I saw the name Daniel Pearl credited as Cinematographer, I was even more stoked. If you don't recognize the name, he's the genius who shot Tobe Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as well as the remake. I'm also a fan of Lauren Cohan, Maggie from the Walking Dead. Oh, and the music for The Boy is scored by Bear McCreary, if you folks need another WD connection. Those are a few pretty good reasons to see a movie, in my humble opinion. So anyway, should I get to whether I liked the movie or not? Okay, here goes.
Yes, I did like it. if you read horcrux's review on this thread, you'll remember that he called The Boy a decent excuse to go to the cinema in January. I agree. The Boy is not a great film, but it's a pretty damn good one, and it's efforts to scare a bit and entertain succeed in pretty much every respect. Believable performances, especially Cohan in the lead, kept me engaged and there was enough suspense and creepiness to satisfy my winter Horror jones.
A few random thoughts...
The film is lush, with deep and textured visuals. Exterior and interior scenes all look amazing, with the rich wood and tile in Brahm's house being a highlight, and it's all pretty subtle so the beauty of the scenery never distracts from the storytelling. Daniel Pearl you've done it again!
Lauren Cohan is just plain sexy in this movie, and not overtly, which is always nice. She's incredibly attractive, likable and talented, and what combination could be sexier than that??
The doll, while at first a bit comical, really kind of made my skin crawl. I loved it and if there is a Brahms doll available, I will own that sucker in a heartbeat.
I think the film deserves a second look on the big screen so I'll be going back one day next week.
