The cartoons were certainly offensive - particularly the one with a "bomb-hat" - but (embassy-burnings notwithstanding) the placards seen waving around London were more offensive, instructing someone to "behead" some other people and threatening Islamic violence against Europe. Not to mention celebrating last year's murderous explosions in the capital.
Freedom of expression, freedom to satire, freedom to protest are one thing - freedom to incite racial/religious violence is another. There is a lot of noise today about tracking down those pictured on the news and prosecuting - something thought to be an unwise move at the time in fear of stoking further unrest.
