Deathwatch

I'm usually not a big fan of war movies, but this is the second war-themed horror film that I've watched recently, and I've really enjoyed both. The other was The Bunker, and Id say this was slightly better. The plot isn't anything overly original, about a company of soldiers that stumble across an abandoned German trench, but it's pulled off very well. The director does a great job creating atmosphere, the perpetual rain and mud in the claustrophobic trenches make for some pretty creepy scenes. The entire cast does a good job, especially Andy Serkis of Gollem fame and Jamie Bell from Billy Elliot. They lead a very talented ensemble cast, all of whom play their characters to perfection. In films like this the characters often blend together, but not here thanks to the above-average performances. It has the kind of ending where you think you know what's going to happen, then you're slapped upside the head with something totally different. It seems pretty obvious after watching it, but I guarantee you that you wont see the ending coming. This film shares it's one major downfall with many war movies: It's brutally slow pacing. There are scenes that seem to go on forever, especially near the first. Otherwise, this is a very well made and creepy film that I highly recommend.

8/10
