SURE: not quite sure the route you'll take up to the falls - sounds like you'll be moving west through NY state from Saratoga (which is near Albany) toward Buffalo and the Falls. So here are some suggestions -

If you were willing to head North from Saratoga for a few hours it is WELL WORTH seeing the Adirondacks - I'd recommend Lake Placid as a base and if you do head that way get a map of the ADKs and see some real mountains (poconos - bah). Two places that are well worth a short drive/walk are: Elk Lake Lodge (which is expensive and private property - but you can park near the lodge and walk up to their Lake which is a truly magnificent setting in the midst of a couple of mountain ranges - stunning). The other, which is about a 2 mile walk, is the Adirondack Loj (spelled that way) and its Heart Lake which is an even more magnificent setting.

If you don't want to head north but want to head west from Saratoga - then I'd say two great sites: 1) Cooperstown (its not just for baseball fans) and 2) the Finger Lakes - a series of glacial lakes (that from overhead to look like fingers) stretching from around Syracuse and Ithaca and almost all the way to Rochester. There are some great wine trails (the wine ain't so great, but the vineyards are beautiful and peaceful and there are some good (fairly cheap) restaurants at several of the vineyards that overlook the lakes. I'd also recommend, if you head that way, checking out Ithaca - cool hippie college town with Cornell and Ithaca College.

If you wanted to hit one of the rusting towns in upstate - I'd recommend Rochester; which has some pretty cool areas around downtown.

Congratulations and enjoy!
