If you aren't using a flash, especially in bright areas, you are bound to get some distortion on a camera.
If it's a shitty digital cam, no flash, and you weren't sitting it completely still for more than 5 or 6 seconds it could have just absorbed a lot of light from that given area, or something.
I've had a lot of weird stuff happen with my photography, most of it I attribute to the camera itself.
