At a guess, I'd say because she found it abrupt and funny...
People are judgemental of all kinds of things...heavier people probably draw more attention due to the outwardness of their condition.
I'm a little overweight myself, not "fat", but yknow...pounds to spare...my frame is pretty large/muscular so it doesn't look er "obese", but it's there all the same. The chef thing probably isn't the BEST occupation to drop a shitload of weight, but hey... See, I differentiate between people that are overweight, to people that are obese. I mean...when you see somebody walking down the street that looks like they have double rumproasts for arms, the people that constantly have those arms stuck out to the side, resting on the mounds of fat underneath them, people that break a sweat and get all puffed out by walking down a flat street...it's a little offputting, you KNOW they're not doing for their health what they could and should be. They need help, but it needs to start with THEM.
However...I don't really think that these people deserve to be openly ridiculed, I mean, it's only really people that are trying to make themselves look better (in who's eyes?) that would openly call it like that. It's rude, and distasteful...I know the type, and yeah, I'm sure there's been more than just this situation where they've mouthed off at something...they'll say shit loud enough for not only the surrounding group, but EVERYONE to hear...as though they're looking for validation in the form of "omg! you're so right/cool/funny", they just strike me as sad cases that'll one day say the wrong thing to the wrong person, and get themselves right slapped the fuck out, or worse...and if that did happen, really when you think about it, their "friends" probably wouldn't even jump in, 'cos they knew what a dick they were being, and it'd probably be a lesson well served. I tend to not hang around lippy bigmouths like that...'cos really, they're only gonna get themselves, and potentially me/you in trouble too.
