These films are frowned upon by many horror movies fans because they ushered a new era of more "mainstream" horror movies aimed for teens and featuring mostly "cool kids". The two films by themsleves were ok, and just ok in my opinion, but it all went downhill from there.
I believe that the new wave of torture movies like Saw and the likes is a counter-reaction of some sorts to all these bland PG-13 horror movies.
