The Libertine

This has to be one of the most boring wastes of time I've ever had the displeasure of sitting through. I saw it had Johnny Depp & John Malkovich, both whom I consider to be excellent actors, and I vaguely remembered the previews looking interesting, so I rented it not really knowing what it was about. Whoops. This sucked! If I had known I was entering into a film about a classical era poet, I probably would have skipped it. There was literally no action, humor or anything remotely interesting. Just a slow paced, boring movie with no real point other than illustrating the life of some unknown, drunk and horny poet from a couple hundred years ago. Yawn...

I thought it sucked BIG TIME and I wouldn't even recommend it to someone I considered an enemy.

D- Only because I can't bare to flunk a Johnny Depp film.

Trick or Treat

Ah, the power of deceptive advertising.... I checked this out because I was led to believe that Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne were main characters. In reality, they share probably a grand total of 5 minutes screen time. Anyways, this was a decent 80s flick about a heavy metal rock star that comes back from the dead via an unreleased album getting played backwards to wreak havoc on the town's unsuspecting teenagers.

It was decent, but not great by any means. Tolerable though.

The Wicker Man (Remake)

Is it just me? Or does labeling something "With shocking alternate ending" lead one to believe that more than 1 ending would actually be included on the DVD. Anyways, here's the deal... I didn't see this in theatres. It came from Netflix the other day and I watched it yesterday morning. I reached the end of the film and then went to extras to see the alt. ending and there wasn't one. WTF? So I am assuming the "Shocking alternate ending" was the one that I saw on the film, but in that case I think they should have put an option to view the original theatrical ending as well, because I hadn't seen it. In any event, I only saw 1 ending and now I doubt it was even the one that everyone else saw when they checked it out in theatres.

All in all, I actually liked this better than the original for a few reasons. My gripes with the original were that there was too much weird singing and hippy dancing going on and this remake seemed to eliminate the majority of that. I also liked how the remake basically had the island belong to a cult of women. What I did not like was the addition of the "twist" (if you can call it that) about how the cult orchestrated everything. That was just a little too far-fetched and unbelievable. I had feared a happy Hollywood ending, so I was glad to see that the (shocking alternate) ending remained fairly loyal to the original.

Overall, I was entertained by this more than I am by most remakes, but this is also a remake I don't have any beef with them making in the first place because I always felt like the original left a lot of room for improvement.
