So long as - like excessively bleating about cooking, actor 'tournaments', and what happened at work today - it isn't spewed out just for the sake of it and starts causing offence.

Evidently, different people take offence to different things.
I mean, sometimes when you see an otherwise bright person defend silly nonsense in the attempt to have a go at people they don't share certain views with, or to again attempt some kind've challenge towards the moderation that they feel they're better qualified for...that's a little dissapointing, and I'm sure intended to be slightly offensive.
So where a few people might find that there's better topics to talk about than say cooking or work...etc...quite a few might beg to differ?
Everybodies right to do so, just as it was in this case.
I personally don't have too many issues if a person wants to talk about their sex life on here...I mean, it's a little sad, but whatever...as long as it isn't invading ALL the other threads (as the imaginary exploits of one certain loser were), yknow whatever...if there's a problem with a thread to the point that you can only give negative input, keep out of it, and yknow, don't bitch about it like a little crybaby in others.
However, majority rules, unfortunately...it would seem that unless this banning was a complete abuse of power, it was more than just one or two people that had a problem with something.
I don't see why this is even an issue...people can come back after being banned...if they're not gonna act up and wreck the place, they'll more than likely be allowed to stay. Time and time again this has been proven. Hey, maybe a change of names will improve his "image" anyways? It's not as though his old one was held in particularly high esteem.
