It's not 70s British- it's future slang. The book is written with quite a bit of it. They toned it down for the movie, but you still get a feeling for it. Perhaps this led to the confusion which hampered your understanding of and appreciation for the film.

Yeah, this could be. It's called
Nadsat, a slang invented by Anthony Burgess, who wrote the book. It's a mixture of English, Russian, and some "Gypsy talk".
I know when I read the book, I had to keep referring to the glossary they included in the back:
