In the early 80s, when the disease first started getting a lot of media attention, true, it was mainly in the gay and intravenous needle communities but twenty years later, there's little doubt that it affects everyone; young, old, gay, straight, man, woman, druggies, blood transfusion recipients. Anyone that's sexually active is at risk now, as well as paramedics, nurses, police, anyone injecting anything with used needles and even people receiving blood transfusions (although quite rare). Regardless of how or where it's origin lies or what demographics it affected first, it certainly affects (or could affect) everybody now. Calling it a "gay" disease leads to the assumption that one can't catch it by having heterosexual sex, which is completely false.
