Will Cronenberg remake his remake of The Fly?
The Hollywood Reporter is offering word that visionary David Cronenberg is in talks with Fox to potentially develop a remake of his 1986 sci-fi masterpiece The Fly.
Fresh from having translated the film into a fully-staged opera which ran recently in both Los Angeles and Paris, the director had been historically resistant to the idea of remakes in general. Perhaps his time on stage provided him with a new context in which to present the story?
It's unclear at this point whether Cronenberg will produce, write or direct the film – or perhaps all three – or whether the remake would closely follow the original's story or depart for an entirely new take.
The original film followed Dr. Seth Brundle who, in an effort to perfect the science of teleportation, inadvertently combines his genetic sequence with that of a fly's. Feeling younger, faster, stronger, Brundle believes his experiment to have been a success until his body begins to change in horrific and monstrous ways.
One imagines that Cronenberg – who doesn't appear like the kind of filmmaker content to rest on his laurels – might use the opportunity to apply a new creative vision to the story, using new technologies to tell a modified version of the story.
More news on this as it comes in.
