Elevator to the Gallows (1958). A masterpiece of French noir by first-time director Malle. The acting is superb, with steamy Moreau melting the screen brooding over her lover, the cool but luckless Ronet. The scene of her crossing the street was insane. Lino Ventura also gives a great if brief perfomance. With sparse dialogue, again this flick does what it is supposed to, show a story unfolding. And quite a story this was, with unforeseen coincidences, childish pranks, and luck culminating into that great ending. The dark atmosphere and camerawork are wonderful, with a score by Miles Davis that addded the perfect touches to an incredible film. Ashe.
