Black Book (2006). This war flick on the Dutch resistance in WWII was an epic marriage of Hollywood know-how and European style. The result is a wonderfully convoluted story composed of rich characters and great production values. The acting was superb, with the lead actress delivering a believably human performance. As well, Paul Verhoeven's direction was simply a cut above his previous works. Never droopy, this flick of almost 150 minutes flies by, with a satisfying conclusion that ties up the loose threads with aplomb. Ashe.
