Chapter 6: Guns a blazing
as michael pulls onto samantha’s street, which is located in a nice, upper class neighborhood, he notices the streets are deserted, and the houses are vacant. Samantha tells michael what the letter had said, as michael pulls up in front of samantha’s home. He looks in samantha’s eyes, and tells her that she needs to gather her things, and take alyssa to the military base, where they will both be safe, and out of harms way, with michael realizing that is not an option for him. Samantha tells michael that she is afraid, and she does not trust that they are telling the truth. Samantha is worried that once they get there, they will do something to harm her or alyssa. Michael eventually convinces samantha, that it is her best option for both of them, to make it out of the city alive. Michael then offers to help sam, gather some of her things that she will need, before the two of them, head to the base. Samantha declines michaels offer, and tells him that she will take care of it. Samantha lets michael know, that he can take her vehicle, and use it to get out of the city, before things get bad. Michael asks, what about you two, how will you get to the base? Samantha then lets michael know, that she has another car in the garage. As samantha gets out of the passenger side, peering in through the open window. Samantha asks michael, “where are you planning to go” ”, just incase things do not go well at the base”. Michael tells samantha, “i am going to head to the prison where i worked” “, and destroy the drugs, that i am certain they still have there”. As samantha begins pulling away, with alyssa in her arms, michael stops her and offers samantha the guns that are in the satchel. Samantha refuses, and lets michael know that jason has a gun rack in the house. Samantha tells michael that jason worked as a police officer before this, and that she thinks he loved doing that, as much as he loved her. Samantha then rushes around the car, with alyssa still in her arms, reaches in the window and gives michael a hug, thanking him for protecting her and alyssa, and says maybe we will see one another again, after all this is over. Michael removes the house key, from the keys still in the ignition, and hands them to samantha. Samantha jogs to the front door as alyssa is waving to michael the whole time, samantha opens the door, and disappears into the darkness, shutting the door behind her. Michaels pulls away, heading towards the prison, realizing that it is the place where this nightmare, first truly began, not knowing if he would ever see samantha and alyssa again, or if they would make it out of this alive. Michael approaches the prison, on a dark deserted country road. Still miles from the prison, michael notices an orange glow, over the horizon. As michael gets closer he realizes, that there is a small section of the building engulfed in flames. Trying to think positive, michael begins hoping that the guards themselves, have began destroying the drugs. However, as michael pulls up to the front gate, he realizes; that probably is not the case. As michael glances up to see that the barbwire, along the top of the fence is entangled with the mutilated corpses, of multiple police guards. Becoming numb and accustomed too the horrors, that he has seen all night long. Michael smashes through the locked gate, driving into the visitor / employee parking lot. Michael climbs out of the vehicle, with his satchel over his shoulder. Before going in the front entrance, michael hesitating, changes his mind and decides to go around to the side entrance, that is attached to one of the guard towers, that over looks the prison yard. Remembering that they are loaded with ammunition and a.k. Assault rifles. He realizes that with the massive number of inmates in the building, it would be a death sentence to enter the front doors, and that he would not have enough ammo to protect himself, especially if the prisoners have already taken over. Michael rushes around to the side of the building to the tower entrance, that allows the guards to access the tower without having to walk through the inmate infested yard. Twisting the handle, trying to open the door as he reaches the tower. However, he notices the doors locked, michael tries kicking it in, but it will not budge. Michael realizes that he is going to have to waste, very valuable bullets to unhinge the lock. Hoping that the tower has not been raided, michael draws the gun up shooting the lock. The door slowly swings open, revealing a circular room, with a set of stairs, and a door straight ahead, leading from the prison yard, that is lying on the floor, completely off its hinges, and looking like it has been smashed with an axe, or some kind of heavy sharp object. Michael slowly starts making his way up the winding stairs, looking at the walls that are covered in blood smeared hand prints, looking over his shoulder as he goes. Michael reaches the entrance to the guard tower, stepping over two dead, muscle bound infected inmates. One of them is grasping an axe in his hand, and both bodies having been riddled with bullet holes, and he notices they are lying atop a busted, splintered door, in pools of blood. Michael lifts his head, to see the gruesome end of a guard, who looks like he tried holding them off, but ended up failing miserably. The guard is crucified, sprawled, and plastered to the wall, in a bloody mess, both his hands and feet impaled with splintered pieces of wood. Michael notices a note, which has been pierced into the guards forehead with a poorly made prison shank. Michael grabs the note covered in blood, that is addressed to some fellow guards, and it reads, (bloody note): Just incase i do not make it out of here, i just want to let you guys know, or whoever finds this, exactly what took place here. We followed through with our orders and administered the drug on the prisoners at 9pm, but there was a horrible side effect. Some of them started killing over immediately, and others started violently killing themselves and one another. We did not intervene, because it was ending with the same goal we had, when we first administered the drug on the prisoners, just a little bloodier, then we had wanted. After all of the prisoners had perished, we went in to begin gathering the bodies and cleaning up the mess. Then the unimaginable happened, the prisoners began coming back to life, even the ones that were brutally mutilated and murdered. They began violently attacking us, and they killed a handful of guards. I and five other guards managed to escape the initial assault. We came up with a plan. We decided that i would run to the guard tower, and try to reach the military base, by radio and let them know, exactly what has happened. I would then wait for the others in the tower, while they went ahead, too burn the rest of the drugs, and destroy them. I managed to reach the tower, but i could not get through to anybody. Nobody answered, so i was unable to inform the base of what is happening here. I am beginning to see a fire in the distance, on the other side of the prison. Therefore, the other guys must have made it. I do not know if there going to make it back to the tower alive though there was a lot of inmates roaming the halls. I have noticed about seven infected inmates, stumbling through the yard. I hope that they do not realize i am up here, i can see that one of them is holding an axe. It does not look good; they are starting to head toward the tower. They must have noticed me up here. I can now hear them now banging on the door downstairs, i have already locked the door up here, and im going to use the guns in here to hold them off, and bring them down, then i am going to get out of here. I cannot wait for you guys any longer. They are attacking my door now with the axe. Oh god, i hope i can make it out of this (end note). After finishing with the chilling note, michael realizes that he wasted his time in coming here, since the guards have already destroyed the drugs. Regretting being here at all now, michael decides to go ahead at least upgrade his arsenal; he sees an a.k. On the ground completely drained of bullets. Michael picks up the empty gun and shoves it in the satchel; the gun slightly hangs out the flap as it barely fits. Michael begins looking for more ammo in the room, but he cannot find any. Michael having worked here, he knows that there are two more guard towers; he begins hoping that he can get lucky, and find some ammo in one of them. Michael heads towards the door and notices that it is slightly open, hoping that the other guards went through here, and not the infected inmates. Michael opens the door all the way. To reveal a long straight walkway, leading across a cement wall, that is littered with bloody footprints, which lead all the way across too the opposing tower door, which is already perched wide open. Shuffling across the vast walkway, michael shoves the pistol in the waist of his pants, as he grips the shotgun firmly in his hands, eagerly suspecting some hideous, grotesque beast to jump out, and get him any second. Slowly approaching the other tower door, out of nowhere, michael sees three scraggly, infected prisoners coming through the door, with one grasping a guards head, in his hand like a bowling ball. Michael decides to forget the ammo and just get out of here, and make a run for the car.
