I liked "1408" because the fear was not that the lead character was going to be killed...but that something was going to drive him insane and make him kill himself. Just like it had done to many other guests; and none lasted more than an hour.
No explanation of the antagonist, either, which is different and leaves a lot to the imagination. When the manager says there is no ghost in 1408, and the writer asks well what's going on in there, the manager replies: "1408 is an evil fucking room." Great line, I was hooked from that moment on.
