Went to see The Gallows last night and was surprised. My prediction that I would either love it or loathe it was wrong. I ended up just feeling kind of...lukewarm about it. It's silly and at times it's fun, particularly when the script deftly draws humor from "theater people" stereotypes, but where's the scares??
The movie seemed to rely solely on jump scares to create tension, which to me, doesn't work. Without tension and some believable drama, the jumps are just gratuitous. I liked the people in the movie, even the as8hole we all are supposed to hate, ( and yes he was obnoxious, which means the actor did his job ), but the movie never creates any palpable fear or anxiety so it fails as horror. I also found the last 5 minutes of the film pretty comedic, and I'm sure that wasn't the filmmakers intention.
I think it was a fun watch, and if you have low expectations and a great buzz, you might at least have a good time. It's frivolous and you wont remember anything about the movie 48 hours later, but it's goofy enough to entertain. If you're looking for a scary movie with a strong story and a plot that isn't totally transparent, search elsewhere my friends.
