Fear Itself

What do people think of NBC's new show "Fear Itself"? I just downloaded and watched the first episode and it was surprisingly better than I thought. I thought it was cool they had Rachel Miner in it as well since she's done a bunch of the After Dark Horror Fest movies.

I watched Brad Anderson's installment, "Spooked." It was solid. Didn't scare me particularly, or impress any too terribly strong images on my brain, but it was solid enough.

I'm currently obsessed with this show. Not because it's good per se, but because it's nice to see a horror-centered show coming back into the mainstream. Sure, it's not Tales from the Crypt or Masters of Horror, but at least it's there.

Though, honestly, of the ones that I've seen so far, here is my feedback:

1. The Sacrifice - BRILLIANT way to open the show. Definitely flawed, but creepy, decent story, and a guest appearance from Rachel Miner who's been around the horror track. It was a good short watch for a Thursday night.

2. Spooked - Had some eerie elements. Felt like an X-Files episode in its latter years where they lacked good writers. I'm not much into ghost stories, so I found most of it cheesy and the "twist" was predictable. I thought that it was weak, but remembered the Pilot episode and kept faith.

3. Family Man - Ugh. Felt like a BAD Twilight Zone episode. Implausible and LAME story with a predictable twist. Bad acting throughout and I was bored. BORED.

4. In Sickness and in Health - This one would have benefited from the full hour and slightly heavier budget of Masters of Horror. I felt like I was watching something from Trilogy of Terror. I thought that the story was good and there were some fabulous eccentric characters, but the end and twist came far too abruptly. I was confused because it was fairly well-directed and it honestly should have been better.

Those are the 4 that I've watched so far. And so far, overall I am underwhelmed. But, like I've said, I find it more important that a show of this variety exists at all because I hope that it both opens the door for amateur horror filmmakers and for the horror genre itself to be adapted to popular media.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The horror genre is way under represented on television, which is a shame for all of us here. Does anyone know if they're still making more seasons of Masters of Horror? I saw the first two seasons, but I don't know if there were more after that.

Fear Itself IS the third season of Masters of Horror. Apparently NBC paid the producer more money than Showtime, or Showtime passed on a season 3 or something.

I haven't really watched much of it myself. I prefer my horror movies to be somewhat realistic you know? What I mean is, when a hockey masked killer attacks you with a chainsaw after eating your dead mother's brains, I expect to hear someone say "HOLY SHIT!!!!" or "WHAT THE FUCK!!"

You're just not going to hear that on NBC.

And no titties either. ...

That's unfortunate. Who doesn't love a good obligatory tit shot?

I watched "Skin and Bones," Larry Fessenden's episode, a week or so ago. It was really good - by far the best of the series that I've seen so far. Honestly scary, good creature effects. Though the script had some clunky moments, I was really pleased by the ep.
