Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1932)

This excellent adaptation with some strong erotic connotations, helping to establish a lasting image of the Hollywood myth of the honorable doctor gradually overwhelmed by his double to uncontrollable impulses. It is also an opportunity for the director to engage in bold experimentation and allows Fredric March to win the Best Actor at the Academy Award in 1932. With this film, Rouben Mamoulian become one of the most innovative directors of his generation in terms of film aesthetics. He continues with the impressive opening including the subjective tracking shot. In the first minutes of the film, the scene is seen through the eyes of Dr. Jekyll, whose face was discovered when he passes a mirror (the audience discovers Hyde in the same way.) The metamorphosis of Jekyll in Hyde is also the opportunity for Mamoulian to experiment with visual and sound effects.

That's what I call cinema with a capital C!!!

I've only seen the 1941 version with Spencer Tracy. I'll have to check out the 1931 version.

The performance of March is so primitive and very intense. The character is much more evil and psychological. For a movie made in the early 30's it's way ahead of his time.

I think you'll like it!!!
