Jackson dumped from future Tolkien projects

11.30am Tuesday November 21, 2006
By Joanna Hunkin

New Zealand director Peter Jackson will not be making The Hobbit or a second Lord of the Rings prequel, according a letter posted on LOTR website Theonering.com.

The letter, from Jackson and partner Fran Walsh was posted this morning and states that New Line are actively seeking another director.

A spokesperson from Wingnut Films confirmed to nzherald.co.nz this morning that the letter was genuine.

"Last week, Mark Ordesky called Ken [Kamins, Jackson's manager] and told him that New Line would no longer be requiring our services on The Hobbit and the LOTR 'prequel'. This was a courtesy call to let us know that the studio was now actively looking to hire another filmmaker for both projects," wrote Jackson.

The announcement comes after an ongoing dispute between Jackson's Wingnut Films and New Line, regarding differing accounting practices, revealed during an audit of the income from The Fellowship of the Ring.

While New Line suggested Jackson agree to make The Hobbit in order to settle the lawsuit, the director refused.

"We have always said that we do not want to discuss The Hobbit with New Line until the lawsuit over New Line's accounting practices is resolved," wrote Jackson.

"In our minds this is not the right reason to make a film and if a film of The Hobbit went ahead on this basis, it would be doomed."

Met with Jackson's firm resolve, New Line's Vice-president Mark Ordesky called the director last week and said that New Line had a limited time option on the film rights, something which Jackson says had never been mentioned before.

Clearly disappointed with the news, Jackson wrote: "This outcome is not what we anticipated or wanted, but neither do we see any positive value in bitterness and rancour."

They don't necessarily want someone else to direct the film. They want to use the job as a bargaining chip to coerce Jackson into settling or dropping the suit. "He'll settle because he wants that Hobbit job something awful!"

Jackson says, "No way, no how will I settle. I want whatever you owe me, proper."

New Line says, "Well, we don't need you for the Hobbit movie then, so there! Say goodbye to some more millions plus profit participation, dumbass. Woo hoo!"

Jackson says, "Well, that's a bummer, but I am satisfied to move on from this. I don't really need to do the Hobbit film. I'll just continue suing your asses off, thank you. You have not succeeded in coercing me. Backfire on you. Double dumb-ass on you!"

********************

New Line will say, "Oh fuck! He's still suing us! That'll cost us a bunch of money! Offer him the Hobbit job again, along with a generous settlement this time."

Peter Jackson will say, "Sure, I'll do the Hobbit job, if you compensate me copiously and settle on that Lord of the Rings thing to the tune of whatever I say. I want X amount of dollars."

New Line will say, "Mother fucker! I mean, uh, SURE! Whatever you like, it'll be fine with us."

Ordesky's on the way out at New Line and this blunder probably just sealed it for him.

Maybe now we'll get to see Tolkien's Middle Earth on film?

I was thinking more along the lines of Corey Haim.
