NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Unforgettable songs like "Tennessee Waltz" and "(How Much Is That) Doggie in the Window?" made Patti Page the best-selling female singer of the 1950s and a star who would spend much of the rest of her life traveling the world.

Page died on New Year's Day in Encinitas, Calif., according to publicist Schatzi Hageman, ending one of pop music's most diverse careers. She was 85 and just five weeks away from being honored at the Grammy Awards with a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Recording Academy.

"Tennessee Waltz" scored the rare achievement of reaching No. 1 on the pop, country and R&B charts simultaneously and was officially adopted as one of two official songs by the state of Tennessee. Its reach was so powerful, six other artists reached the charts the following year with covers.

Two other hits, "I Went To Your Wedding" and "Doggie in the Window," which had a second life for decades as a children's song, each spent more than two months at No. 1. Other hits included "Mockin' Bird Hill," "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte," and "Allegheny Moon." She teamed with George Jones on "You Never Looked That Good When You Were Mine."

David R. Ellis @ 60. (Snakes on a Plane, The Final Destination)

Director David R. Ellis — who helmed mass entertainment like Snakes on a Plane, Cellular, and The Final Destination — died today.

He was 60 years old. No cause of death has been released.

Ellis got his start as an actor and stuntman, transitioning into directing the second units on action-based productions like Waterworld, The Perfect Storm, The Matrix Reloaded, and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. His feature directing debut was the 1996 family production Homeward Bound 2: Lost in San Francisco, but he quickly transitioned to genre-soaked thrillers starting with 2003′s Final Destination 2, Asylum, Shark Night 3D, among others.

According to Deadline, he reportedly passed away in Johannesburg, South Africa while prepping his next film, Kite, an adaptation of a Japanese animé that has Snakes on a Plane star Samuel L. Jackson attached as the lead.

Patty Shepard @ 68.

Actress Patty Shepard, with nearly 50 Spanish and Italian films to her credit, has died of a heart attack in her home in Madrid on January 3rd.

She was 68.

Born in South Carolina, Shepard moved to Madrid at age 18 to study philosophy and never left. She starred in a number of Paul Naschy films, including La Noche de Walpurgis (aka The Werewolf Versus the Vampire Woman) and Los Monstruos del Terror (aka Assignment Terror). Other horror titles to her credit includes Hannah, Queen of the Vampires; Rest in Pieces; Edge of the Axe; Slugs; El Monte de las Brujas; and My Dear Killer.

Nagisa Oshima @ 80.

Nagisa Oshima, a Japanese director internationally acclaimed for his films "Empire of Passion" and "In the Realm of the Senses," has died of pneumonia. He was 80.

His office, Oshima Productions, said Oshima died Tuesday afternoon at a hospital near Tokyo after being in and out of hospital since he was struck by a stroke more than a decade ago.
