I have to agree with Clerks, Donnie Darko, and Pulp Fiction.

I also think Garden State and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are amazing. I think they are both original and not taken from anything else.

Meh, I can't really add much myself, people pretty much said it all. I guess I could throw in The Descent, and I was thinking Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but isn't that a book?

Yep, Pulp Fiction and Garden State are wonderful. The Sting and Easy Rider have fantastic, original stories.

It's harder than I thought to come up with great films that weren't based on a book.. A few good ones already mentioned, like Night of the Living Dead and 28 Days Later. I'd also add:

Blood On Satan's Claw
Eye Of The Devil
The Exorcist
Witchfinder General
Rasputin The Mad Monk

Some of those are based on real-life events, if that's OK.
