fun album. Newb would hate it - there's a lot of disco and glam in there :)

Now reached the end of my month of Christmas music.

On the 25th November I untick everything on my computer and phone that isn't Christmas music. Not that I get bored - I have 11 hours of the stuff. Yes, I'm afraid I'm THAT guy. Whistling Good King Wencelas before advent has even started. I JUST LOVE CHRISTMAS TOO MUCH!

Elton John - The Captain and the Kid.

I recently found this in a thrift store and my heart leapt - as I'd never heard of this before but by the title I knew it must be a follow-up to Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy - one of my favourite albums of all time.

And indeed that's what it was.

Although it was nowhere as magical and majestic or as interesting as the original, this album starts out pretty good for the first 3 or 4 songs before falling back into the unoriginal musicianship of Elton Johns latest works. I just think he got lazy as he got older.

I think you need to be hungry to create interesting works .. complacency is not the breeding ground for genius.

Oh well, a couple of nice tunes in the beginning .. enough to make it a far better album than anything he's done in decades.

Yes youngsters, in the 70's - Elton John was badass .. but I'm sad to say... The Bitch is not quite Back.

For sure. Those early albums were straight up killer shit. It really sucks how bad his music got.

You can say the same thing about Rod Stewart too. Everything up to the late 70s was solid but then he got bland and commercial.

The late 70s was a real weird time for a lot of musicians....some didn't adjust to the change [ yes...I'm talking DISCO] and faded away..[Grand Funk and that type of heavy 70s rock and some embraced it [ Bee Gees, Rod Stewart...even Rolling Stones to some extent]

Same deal with the 90s too. Most hard rock bands either faded or put out some pretty embarrassing stuff trying to fit into the "alternative" craze.

This right here. Ive always thought the majority of bands or artists best work is almost always their first album. After a band gets a touch of success they never are the same again. (granted there are some very few exceptions)
