I think you gotta go back farther than the 80's to find true HORROR icons. I just don't see how a demented nutcase in a mask packing a knife or something killing a bunch ot teenagers who are too stupid to get away is horrifying at all. Movies like that are good for a little laughter and even some degree of tension every now and then. But they spend more energy trying to startle you by some sudden, unexpected event than trying to actually build a paralyzing fear in the pit of your soul! That's what I call horror.

I actually haven't been seeing that much gore in the newer movies. I expected an absolute gore-fest from Cabin Fever but I didn't get it. Still dug the flick though, just wasn't as gory as they led on.
