I agree, the second is the best....although I do like the crazy plot and creepy, foggy ship in the third one...

The first two movies were originally cut in the UK, and possibly abroad. Rumours abound that most of these films exist in long lost longer prints.

They are generally high on atmosphere, with the painfully slow moving templars shifting effectively to the grim, groaning soundtrack and some creepy slow-motion.

Some sleazy moments too.

The recent coffin-shaped box set presents the films in allegedly "uncut form."

I take them at their word on the first two films, both of which are presented in two versions -- a dubbed cut version and a subtitled uncut version.

I'm suspicious of the second two films, which are presented in only one version (with options for langauges and subtitles). They seem considerably tamer than the first two, which makes one wonder if there is not a more explict version of either one out there.

Of course, determining what is cut and uncut can be tricky in a case like this, where the films were co-productions between two or three different countries. In the extras on the box set, Spanish writer-director Amando de Ossorio hints that sometimes the German co-producer would ask for more nudity, and indeed the photo gallery shows quite a few nude pics that are not in RETURN OF THE BLIND DEAD. Does this mean the film was "cut," or does it mean that extra stuff was shot and added for export to Germany?

They just digitally remastered the originals and released it as the box set, adding some scenes but not all. Some scenes still remain deleted from all 4 movies...maybe they decided that they better stay in the box...

Pt.1 was ok, pt.2 was cool(and the best), pt.3 and 4 below average...all in all a fair series of movies which promised well but didnt deliver...although some scenes of pt.2 remain in ur thoughts even when the movie is long over...

Well, if alternate scenes were shot for different counties, you would expect to see "all" the scenes in the film -- although it would be nice to have them as extras on the DVDs.

Cetainly, this version of RETURN OF THE BLIND DEAD is far more complete than any previously available in the U.S., so we shouldn't be griping too much if some extra nudity for the German version didn't find its way in.
