I was going to give a snarky reply but then I realized that apparently my acronym skills are poor.

It should be SWD: Sukiyaki Western Django: Takashi Miike's new film that reexamines the Western.

i'm trying to arrange to start seeing the critically acclaimed films but have only seen one of the big 'indie' hits so far . . .

but, it was amazing - so I'll say SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE - danny boyle's indian fairy tale was a great example of indie filmmaking - complex plot structure, great acting, unique intercultural vibe, etc. the film, for those who haven't heard about it, tells the story of a young indian man who grew up in the abject poverty of a mumbai slum and is heading for the 20 million ruppee (which is like a million dollars) on their version of who wants to be a millioniare. As he is questoined about how he could know all the answers, we learn his life story and all the odd twists of fate that has brought him here. wrapped around this plot are brotherly love, betrayal, and a touching story of true love.

this is one i walked out of the theater feeling happier than when i'd gone in so it gets my nod at the moment.

next up for me are: milk, gran torino and - if i can find a theater with it - the wrestler.

and on the dk front - i liked that film and thought it was very smart for what it was - but i'll stand by my bold prediction - it will not get a best picture nomination and, in fairness, probably doesn't deserve one.

I saw trailers for that, it looks good. The main character was in the TV show Skins.

.
Good salesmanship there, Zero.

I wanna see that movie now and give Boyle a second chance after his Sunshine train wreck.

And yes, Gran Torino was on my mind as well. But still...

Wow. I'm having a retarded morning. I forgot about Slumdog Millionaire.

I'd say best picture I've seen this year.

In fairness, though, we had a really damn good summer of blockbusters:
  • Iron Man
  • The Dark Knight
  • Hellboy II
  • WALL-E

We also had some decent horror with (favorites of mine are bold):
  • Cloverfield
  • [rec] (still haven't seen!)
  • Quarantine
  • Home Movie
  • Diary of the Dead
  • Inside (À l'intérieur)
  • Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer
  • Let The Right One In (still haven't seen!)
  • Midnight Meat Train
  • My Name Is Bruce (still haven't seen!)
  • Repo! The Genetic Opera (still haven't seen!)
  • Shrooms
  • The Signal
  • The Strangers
  • Teeth
  • Feast II: Sloppy Seconds
  • Tokyo Gore Police
  • Dance of the Dead
  • Otis

(Some of these movies were made in 2007, but according to about.com, they were actually released in 2008)

Actually... Let The Right One In may be the 2008 winner for me.

Not because their country lies right next to mine, but because I CAN'T COME UP WITH ANYTHING BETTER!!!!
