Columbia Pictures has set Kurt Wimmer to write "Total Recall," the remake of the 1990 sci-fi pic that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Wimmer has been working with the studio on "Salt," the Phillip Noyce-directed espionage thriller starring Angelina Jolie. Wimmer wrote the story for that film and shares screen credit with Brian Helgeland.

Wimmer also co-wrote the F. Gary Gray-directed "Law Abiding Citizen," which stars Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler, for the Film Department.

"Total Recall" was resurrected for remake earlier this year by the studio and producer Neal Moritz and his Original Films banner.

Pic will be a contemporized adaptation of the science fiction saga based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale."

Columbia secured remake rights from Miramax, which has the option to co-finance the film when it is ready to shoot.

I dont have any special connection to the original or anything (never actually seen the whole thing, to be honest), but I'm not sure how to feel about the fact that they're starting to remake movies released in my lifetime....not sure if I should start feeling old, or just really sickened by Hollywood.

I'd see this, though I struggle to see the point other than money as well.

But I doubt it'd be half as good as the original.

Then again, there've been some remakes that've kicked the original's ass, so who knows?

remakes ARE the history of Hollywood and film in general

Kate Beckinsale has been offered one of the female leads in the Total Recall remake -- the Sharon Stone role, which is the juicer of the two in the original film if you ask me.

However, Deadline reports that Beckinsale, who is married to the remake's director Len Wiseman, hasn't yet accepted the gig.

The other female lead is that of Melina (played in the original by Rachel Ticotin). Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson are leading the race on that front, reportedly.
