a lot of Christians will say this because it hits them where they live. If you believe in god and the devil then i would say you could very well find this the scariest movie ever.

i dont believe in those things but i will say the exorcist set the bar for mainstream horror .. it is very well made and atmospheric.

I agree. im an atheist, but still find it scary as hell.

For the most part, if people say it isntdcary to them, they are either very cynical or just trying to be a bad ass.

Me and the three other people I watched it with found this to be a rather heaping pile of trash. I wouldn't really call it scary. Typical, and it had SOME atmosphere. Nowhere NEAR as scary as some others. But then again... it depends on tastes. It was definately one of the lower-rated horror movies I've seen in the past few years.

For classics;

Nightmare on Elm Street
Friday the 13th
Halloween
Child's Play

Evil Dead 1 & 2 (2 specifically)
Dead Alive / Braindead

Ringu / The Ring

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)

House of 1000 Corpses
The Devil's Rejects
The Hills Have Eyes 06

PS. Mothman, someone has. Infact, Vodstok did in the first reply to this thread.
And may I ask you what exactly scares you?

Movie-wise, not much has given me the chills. Since I was young, at least, and I've ben longing for the feeling again.

Fear-wise in real life, they mainly lie in things that can actually happen. The thought of someone watching you from outside your window, the thought that someone might be in your room at that very moment you're thinking it. The thought that, hey, if someone wants to bust into your house now and kill you - not much is going to stop them.

That's what scares me.

I'm also big on imagination. The one film that I can claim has given me the chills is The Blair Witch Project.

I re-read my comment and it seems sort of bitchy, and I'm sorry if I came off that way. It seems I mainly due because of the way I write. I just didn't, personally, find Dead Birds to be anything extraordinary. Everyone is different.

Anywho, must sees:
Dog Soldiers
Alien
Aliens
Alien3
Night of the Living Dead (Both Versions)
Dawn of the Dead (both versions, watch all 3 old movies first)
Day of the Dead
An American Werewolf In london
The Lost Boys
Jaws
Silver Bullet
The Hills Have Eyes (both versions)
Evil Dead 1 and 2
The Exorcist

more to come
I can see how the lady in the water woudnt be considered to be horror, I laughed in it a lot, and the only actually horror parts was when the wolf jumped out, which wasnt scary, but my sister kept screaming and jumping in my ear. I did think that it was brillantly done, and the plot was very original.

I also failed to mention that I have seen dawn of the dead, and land of the dead. I liked dawn of the dead better.

I didn't think the Exorcist was all that. I've watched it quite a bit and never thought it was really "scary." Maybe a TAD eerie but it will be your own opinion.

And I also agree that you have to find what you like. Don't listen to other people because all our tastes vary. I personally rarely look at the back covers of movies because if I read them I could be passing up a really decent movie (and that has happened before).
