All right here goes... shouldn't be too hard
- this film was considered so offensive that it effectively destroyed the career of its director - the screenplay was written by a former WWII codebreaker turned West End playwright - originaly reviled and ignored in it's home of England, this film was "saved" by Martin Scorsese (who's longtime editor is the director's widow) 20 years after its initial release

The first clue reminded me of Michael Powell. A search at IMDB confirmed it later. :D
Alright here we go :- - Jason Statham turned down this movie to do Ghosts of Mars. - This is one of the fewer movies which has actually used very little CGI effects. - This movie probably takes place on the night when England beat Germany 5-1 at soccer. More clues when you ask for them...guess the movie?
