"Julia X" 7/10

Started out as an average cat-chasing-mouse serial killer flick, but turned out to be more twisty than expected with a last part that had me laughing out loud. Crazy bastards. :D

I'm pretty disappointed at how bad everyone is saying "Smiley" is, I felt like they had such a bad ass character to go off of, but it seems like they found a way to fuck it up.

Someone said again how awesome IP Man was, I agree, just fyi be prepared for a slight let down with IP Man 2

I recently watched Mortuary with Bill Paxton, It was a run of the mill 80's Slasher with a healthy serving of cheese and a single memorable performance from Bill Paxton... Not terrible, not great.

Very average HK thriller staring the great Anthony Wong. Rich Business man goes to extremes to avenge his daughters kidnapping.

Excellent and complex crime flick about the internal struggle for power in a Triad Society.

Much like alot of Meadows films it covers disfuctional life up North. Great acting from the 2 kids and Paddy Considine is totally off the wall in this one...

..and yeah I did really like that film :D

also I think 'baffling' is a great word to discribe The Tall Man (on all levels) - what were they thinking...
hahaha - You know, you're the reason why I don't say "torture porn" around these here parts (though I will still claim that it's the best phrase to describe the type of horror that I'm trying to attribute it to).

The more I think about The Loved Ones, the more I like it actually. Having a fantastic climactic reveal like it did elevated it from "those kind" of movies for me. :p

I have a hard time with movies that are pure torture (not a judgement; just a comfort level thing), and this movie had a bit more going on, so I liked it more than, say a Mum & Dad. Robin McLeavy (Lola) toward the end was really funny; some great direction there as she goes utterly mad.

I think I'd actually go as far to recommend this movie, sans caveats.

How do you feel about THAT, eh??

Honestly, if he had started out with the dark crime drama tone and kept it throughout I probably would have liked it a lot more. This movie makes me think of Gone Baby Gone, which handles a very similar message, but does so effectively. I didn't think that The Tall Man effectively created a dialogue with the audience - The dialogue is, What is the right answer? How do we address the problem of poor and abused children with a system that doesn't work? - But I don't think that we really saw a broken system or really awful living conditions to build up half of the dialogue. It was just a diatribe on a topic that could have been interesting if done well, but I do not thing it was.

So strange and uneven. Makes me wonder where the movie started before production - there was a clear point that the director wanted to make, but it was just not successful for me.

Re: Ferox, Roshiq, and Fortunato's buzz about Mother - Been meaning to watch this for some time and tried it yesterday; wasn't in the mood, so I'll give it another try. I'm going to be honest; I felt sooo much pathos for the mother and son right off the bat that I had a hard time going any further because her just running out of the restaurant when he was clipped by the car broke my heart (and this is before anything really happened!!) - All I can think of was, "It can just go downhill from here. LOOK AWAY." :o Man, when did I become such a pussy???

Exorcismus
(2010)

Pretty awful writing, acting, and directing. Didn't get very far with this one. Didn't seem worth the trouble.

I am glad you like it.

It's a fantastic little contemporary piece of cinema (that's why it finds a place in the HDC Top 200 of the 2000s) and more people need to see it to appreciate it for what it was.

Berserk, at it's absolute best. Try beating this intensity in a horror film.

Totally agree. I also think that it had a lot more going on than an average torture flick - I think that Lola's insanity definitely mirrors the teenage female compulsion toward beauty, popularity, and finding that "prince."

I was really reticent going into it just because I know where my comfort level lies when watching exploitative horror, so I was really surprised at how much I genuinely liked it (versus, say a Mum & Dad where I can say, "Sure, it's a very well-made film, but I can't say I liked it because it was past my comfort zone.")
